Images disappearing
Feb 09, 2018
I just saw quite a few postings about this from several years ago, but I'm relatively new to the software and am experiencing this.
Could someone provide guidance on what is causing images to go blank? The image is clearly there because I can click the "blank space" and it selects something, but the image doesn't show up in the .story file or the published version.

Hi,
It actualy looks like a shape you have inserted (since the little yellow square shows). If you select the item and look at the timeline you will see if it is a image/a rectangle etc.
It could be that it is set to transparent 100%. Right click the "image" and select format shape (or similar. Now look at the Fill tab and make sure it is set to transparant 0%. However if it a image make sure it also is 0% transparent.
Hope it helps!
Hi Jonas,
Thanks for the quick feedback!
I can confirm that it is an image, and it's set to 0% transparent. I've even selected "Reset Image" just in case there was something edited I wasn't aware of, it remains blank.
Any other ideas?
Hi Hannah, this is a real puzzle! Do you have the original image file? If so, what happens if you delete the image on the slide and re-import it?
Also, what version of Storyline are you working with?
Hi all!
Following up on this chain because it just happened again. The funny thing is that it's doing it both for images I've imported and standard Content Library items. Icons are safe; it only impacts photos and characters.
I've attached the file here so you can see that the timeline and slide preview on the left shows everything is there, but the actual slide doesn't show it.
Thanks for any help you can provide!
Hi APIC,
Thanks for reaching out and letting us know what you are experiencing.
What slide(s) are you seeing this issue on? First glance shows the slide content for me, but wanted to reach out and make sure I'm looking at the right slides.
Hi Leslie!
Funnily enough, it is the slides after the ones you tested: 17-35.
When you look at the timeline, you will see that there are photos and characters there, and while they show up on the left preview, it's not in the main screen.
Thanks for the confirmation. I am seeing some strange behavior as you're reporting:
I imported your project into a new file to see if this would alleviate the issue and got some additional slides with missing items.
I did get an error message as well, so I'm opening a support case on your behalf so that you can work directly with one of our support engineers to get to the bottom of this issue.
Be on the lookout for an e-mail from our team.
Thanks Leslie!
I have exactly the same problem. Images are there, file saved, then a come back a few days later to continue working and some images have disappeared though they still appear in the timeline and icons (but eventually disappear from icons as well. I have to go back and rename the image then reinsert it. This happens quite often so it has become a real annoyance. Any ideas?
Hi Maria,
Thanks for reaching out and letting us know that you are running into a similar issue with your project.
Be sure you're working on your local hard drive (typically your C: drive) when creating, editing, and publishing Storyline courses. Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, such as file corruption or an inability to save changes. Check out this article for more information and tips.
Hi,
We're also running into this issue here - the problem is we are working in an enterprise environment and all our PC's are networked to a shared drive. For now, we're working off local storage and have filed a ticket to have local storage added to other stations - though this in contrast to our general IT policies - hopefully this mitigates this issue. Having to rework modules due to this issue is putting deadlines at risk for training that must go live in less than a month.
That is exactly our issue. Since this is work done for my employer, saving any files to a local drive is against our IT policies. I would imagine this is common among many users and am surprised there isn't a way to fix this.
The same thing actually just occurred to a few audio files that we recorded right in the file, requiring us to re-record.

Thanks for reaching out to our support team as well, Jason. I can see that Vevette is taking a look and you should be hearing from her soon.
Hello, I am wondering if there has been a solution to this. I am running into this same issue where images just randomly disappear. Any support you can provide would be appreciated. Thank you.
Hi Sarah,
I'm sorry you're running into images randomly disappearing! Have you tried importing the course into a new file to see if there are any corrupt elements that appear? You can do this by opening a new file and going to File->Import and selecting your Storyline course.
Our support team would also be happy to lend a hand. Feel free to share your file using the link below.
This issue is occurring for me as well and it's not just images, it's audio too. Have there been any solutions other than importing everything into a new file? I have a lot of project variables that I'd like to keep intact. Also, this method has never really helped me sort out which element is causing the erratic behavior.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I used to have this problem all the time. The solution I found was to close out the program when I took long breaks. The files seem to get corrupted when left them open in my computer. If I forget to close out, I close as soon as I come back to the program without saving any changes. This way, if the file was corrupted when I was away, the corrupt changes won't be saved. Since I started doing this several months ago, I haven't run into the problem which plagued me constantly before.
Thanks for your reply, Maria. I tend to leave my projects open for long periods a lot, so I'm going to take this advice. And it makes sense that if you forget to close, to not save changes when you return since the corrupt elements will be saved along with the file. Really appreciate this!
I am getting the same issue. I was testing the 'text to speak' function for partially sighted access. I also added an on/of switch. When I published it to show a colleague, many of the images on the layers disappeared. Also, the audio wasn't working on all slides.
Hello Chrisie!
We are happy to help! I'd like our team of Support Engineers to work with you directly. Can you upload your .story file in a support case? We'll let you know as soon as we receive the project and continue troubleshooting via email.
This has been happening to me as well. My pictures look fine until I try to preview or publish, then parts of my picture disappear...
Hi, Brooke.
Great call opening a support case! I see you're working with Johnrey, so you're in great hands!
Please reach out through the case if you have additional questions.
This has happened to me multiple times as well. Images are visible in the story view but not on the slide, although they are still 'clickable'.
Hi, Caitlin!
I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing this issue as well. I've opened a support case on your behalf so we can investigate what's going on. You'll be hearing from one of our Support Engineers soon via email.
So people keep having this issue. I am having it too and I work off of my hard drive. Would it be possible for you to share the solution you found for all this folks so we all don't have to submit use cases?
