Images not displaying

Apr 30, 2013

When I insert an image, it doesn't display correctly. It is cut off and only the top left corner is visible. Very weird. Any ideas? I've attached it an example, but it happens on every .story file I have on my system... ones I've created and ones that were supplied by Storyline. (I'm not sure if this matters, but I'm still on the trial version... I'm planning on purchasing if I can get this resolved. I'm also viewing through Parallels on a Mac--I wish Storyline was Mac-compatible, but that's another post for another time ))

Hey Josh, welcome!

Sounds like a DPI issue. Storyline will function as expected when Windows is set to 96 DPI (dots per inch).

Storyline doesn't currently support 120 DPI. If your system is set to 120 DPI, you may experience erratic behavior, such as:

*  Elements of the application are misplaced or distorted.

*  Objects are misplaced or distorted when previewed or published.

*  Zoomed images don't work as expected.

*  Font sizes are incorrect after using the translation features.

Here's how you can switch to 96 DPI.

You'll also want to be sure you're following some basic rules to prevent strange behavior:

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names.

Let us know if that doesn't help, and we can go from there.

Thanks!

Hi Josh. Welcome to E-Learning Heroes!

Thanks for the file. I took a look and the object seems to be displaying fine on my end:

Sounds like it may be a system-specific issue. If you can, please make sure your system is currently running the supported DPI setting. Storyline doesn't currently support 120 DPI. If your system is set to 120 DPI, you may experience erratic behavior, such as:

*  Elements of the application are misplaced or distorted.

If that doesn't help, please check your current zoom settings. If you're using anything above or below 100%, please set your zoom to 100% and see if that resolves the problem.

Let me know if you see any improvement.

Thanks and welcome again!

Thanks for the super-quick reply. Unfortunately, it didn't work. I've attached what I see (there are actually two shapes on the slide… I added one for testing since the one you saw.)  I also sent a screen grab of what I see when viewing the "Insert Content" .story provided by Articulate. I'm able to see the outline of the shape when I click on it (the sizing edges are apparent), and I can add text, but I can't see it. (So I'm entering text I know is there just because spell check put a red underline under misspelled words.)

My display is set for 100%. And again, I didn't have this problem before. The last thing I can remember doing before experiencing the problem was Previewing something I was working on, and then clicking "Edit Slide" instead of "Close Preview", like I had done every time prior. I don't expect that would be it, but I'm completely confounded.

Any advice?

Christine Hendrickson

Hi Josh,

Hmm. That does look strange.

Can you confirm you're using the most recent version of Storyline, please? To find this information please click on "Help" and "About Articulate Storyline". If you're not using version 2 (1212.1412), please download and install Update 2 from the link below.

Download Update 2

Hopefully that will fix the problem, if not, maybe a simple repair will take care of things:

Hopefully this will do the trick. If not, please let us know!

Thanks again Josh :)

It is 1212.1412. I uninstalled and re-installed. No luck. Sorry to be a nuisance... but I'm trying to show this off at work (trying to get my boss to purchase a number of seats of this), and I'm hurting my cause! I love the software and want them to love as much as I do.

I'm running it through bootcamp/parallels on my mac. Do you think that might be an issue? It's just confusing because it worked for the first few days I had it. I just ran into trouble today. I'm worried that I hit a setting and messed it up. Is there any way to go back to the system defaults?

josh fernandez

I played around with settings and got it back to normal. Apparently, it has to be at 125% on my computer rather than 100%. It means that the icons on the ribbon are all tiny when viewed on my laptop monitor, but they're big enough when I plug into my other monitor. I'm hoping that my PC counterparts at work don't have a similar problem, but I'll have them download the trial version first to see.

don't worry about that last question... i figured that out, too. but here's my LAST question (at least for tonight):

i've created some custom colors and I want them to appear as my first choices when I click fill/text colors. but to get to them, i always have to click "more colors" and then select them from the custom colors i created. is there any way i can move them closer?

thanks.

and sorry for being so crazy.

Christine Hendrickson

Good morning Josh!

Looks like you were able to get quite a bit working on your own there :D Glad to hear that!

If you create a custom color, you will need to use the "More color options.." feature to use it again. However, if you're applying the same color/formatting to a objects, you could always try using the Format Painter. That little tool can come in pretty handy.

If you haven't already, you might want to check this out:

Using the Storyline Clipboard

I hope this helps. Have a great day, Josh!

hi christine.

another couple questions for you:

1. i got the free trial of articulate online, too, which is great. but when i view my published course, it doesn't show the resources button (I attached a word file). i also embedded the word document into the file so when the user clicks a logo, the document should download. neither instance was possible on the ipad. any thoughts?

2. is there any other way to view storyline on an ipad OTHER than articulate online?

3. i tried to download the course by putting my ipad on airplane mode and clicking the file. it told me some files were missing. am i doing something wrong? basically, i just want to know if it is really possible to download the course so it's native on the ipad.

thanks.

Christine Hendrickson

Good morning!

Sounds like you may be publishing for the Articulate Mobile Player. Is that right? If so, it may not be an issue with hosting the content on Articulate Online, sounds like it's a limitation of the mobile app.

Take a look:

The Resources tab is not supported in the Articulate Mobile Player. If you'd like to include that tab, you may want to try publishing for HTML5.

For more information on what features are supported in the different publishing formats, please see the following chart:

Comparing Storyline's Flash, HTML5, and Articulate Mobile Player output

For the second issue, this is actually a limitation of Articulate Online, not the app. Articulate Storyline gives you the option to allow learners to download content to their iPads for offline viewing in the Articulate Mobile Player app. However, Articulate Online requires an Internet connection to view and track content. As a result, we've currently disabled the ability to view courses offline when they're hosted in Articulate Online.

I hope this answers your questions :) If you need any further information, just let me know!

Thanks,

Christine

Good morning Josh,

Without any type of server?

I'm afraid not, users would need to be able to download/visit a URL placed on some type of web server or host in order to view content on any mobile device.

If you can give me a little more information about the situation, maybe I can give you some suggestions :)

Thanks!

I recently purchased Storyline. I've created an eLearning that demonstrates the capabilities of Storyline for my clients so they can see what we can do. My clients have their own servers, and I'm assuming I can work with their IT folks when we do a project for them. (I'm sure I'll be emailing you back then to see how to do it.)

My issue right now is that now that I've created the file, but I can't get it to play on my iPad. Or send it to anyone so they can view it on theirs. Any tips? I do have a website... should I contact my provider to see what they can do for me?

Christine Hendrickson

Hi there Josh,

You could certainly ask your provider to see if they can host the content for you.

Other options would be to use a free LMS (there's quite a few out there), the free trial for Articulate Online, or maybe see if you can get access to your client's web servers. Since you're creating the content for a client, I'm sure they'd understand that you would need access to the servers to test the content.

Servers and settings can vary, so this may be the best option. You'll want to be able to ensure the content works properly on their servers. If you use another server for testing, everything could be 100% operational. If there's a difference between the servers, however, you could run into issues after releasing the content to the client or uploading to their servers. It might be best to know right off the bat if there's a problem viewing the content where the client intends to host it.

Just some suggestions, though! :) I'd hate to see you put in a ton of work, test it out on a server and experience issues once you've moved everything over to the clients servers.

Hey Josh :D

Is the font actually installed on the system? If so, did you install the font while Storyline was open? If it was installed while Storyline was running, it might help to close and reopen Storyline, or try restarting the machine.

If that doesn't help, can you tell me which font you're trying to use? Is it one that you created, or is it a "freebie" font, etc.?

Thanks!

Hi Christine,

For some reason, my mobile player isn't functioning.I've already downloaded several courses, and can't retrieve any of them. Check out the attached image. That's all I get. I saw that some other people had this problem, but nobody in the community gave an answer for how to resolve. (I actually posted this question on the thread, but never heard back from anyone, which made me think it was a "dead" thread".)

In any case, the library and help buttons work, but the rest of the screen doesn't change.

Any ideas?

(i did uninstall and reinstall the player).

Hi Josh,

Christine has taken another position with Articulate and doesn't get back into the forums as often. Is this a recent development for you? There was a new version of the AMP released last week which you may need to download the latest update. Also, have you recently updated to iOS7? There are a number of community members in this thread discussing developments with iOS7, and you're also welcome to connect with our Support team if these are new developments within iOS7.

Leslie McKerchie

Hi Josh! Are you trying to launch the content 'from' the Articulate Mobile Player? You will not see the content this way. If you open a link to content that has been published to allow viewing in AMP and it is installed on the device, then it will launch in the AMP automatically. To understand how Storyline determines how to display your content, check out this article.

josh fernandez

I'm pretty sure I'm launching it properly. (I'm in Parallels, so I publish in Storyline on the PC side, email a link of the url to my iPad, and then click the link on my iPad, which launches it automatically for me.)

I've had the player running before and had several courses downloaded to my iPad. However, they've disappeared now that I've updated to the most recent software version. Instead, all I see is the screen  from the image attached a couple posts ago.I re-uninstalled and re-reinstalled yesterday and now get the screen from the image attached to the most recent post.

Still nothing.
