Importing open format video files into Storyline

Feb 21, 2024

Hello,

This is more of a request than a discussion, but I am trying to import an MKV video file into an Articulate Storyline project and after several failed attempts and a bit of research I discovered that it's not supported for importing directly into the program.  I now have a question about how you prioritized formats to include, and why the .mkv format which is widely used and an open standard, was not included in the Storyline product development.   Is that something we would request for a future update?

There are a lot of video and screen capturing software products which natively save to mkv, and having to do file conversions can create loss or artifacts which I would prefer to avoid.

mkv is a MUCH more complex format and has many more options than mp4

browser don't support the mkv video container, so every mkv has to be converted

if h264 video codec is used in the mkv, you can loosless repack the video stream to mp4 with avidemux or ffmpeg - but you will loose all special mkv features (multiple audio tracks, CC, ...)

then import the video to storyline and deactivate video (re)compression
