Key press triggers not working after an overlaying layer hides.

Jun 04, 2012

If you create a layer on a slide and create a method by which the layer is shown (I'm using a "mouse hovered over" trigger connected to a show layer action, with "restore on mouse leave" enabled), when that layer closes, any "key pressed" triggers on the underlying slide or layer will not function.

At this point, if you click anywhere on the slide the key press triggers will begin working again normally.

This leads me to believe that the layer that was previously showing still has 'focus' despite being hidden. This only seems to affect the key board triggers, because mouse click triggers obviously establish the correct focus and activate the right triggers to begin with.

Is this a bug? Is there a workaround or a way to force the underlying layer to 'grab' the focus? Is there something mystical and esoteric that I'm failing to account for?

Hi Guys, I was just wondering if there was an update on this functionality.

Much like everyone else, I would like to add 'left' and 'right' key presses, along with using a mouse activated previous and next button, to move through my course.   But the key press only works if you use the mouse to click on the screen, then click the 'left' or 'right' keyboard key.

Please let me know if we have made any progress with this functionality.

Thanks

Hi all,

You may find that key-press triggers you've assigned to a slide don't work if you click the slide in your Flash output before invoking the key-press triggers.

This issue was fixed in Update 7 for Articulate Storyline 2. Install the latest version of Storyline 2 to take advantage of the new features and fixes, then republish your course. With this fix, you'll want to ensure you're using a key press trigger or a click trigger on the object, not both of those triggers on the same object.

If you're still having issues with your course, please feel free to let us know here or by reaching out to our Support Engineers here.

One more quick question on this topic.  In my project I have a few learning checks and a quiz at the end.  So basically I have three question banks.  All multiple choice or true/false.  I created triggers for numeric keyboard responses, so the user can select 1-4 or 1 or 2.  I just noticed that I have no issue if I use the numbers as part of a qwerty keyboard...but if I use the numbers on the number pad they don't respond.  Any idea why this might be happening?

Help! My custom "jump to previous slide" trigger or jump to home (slide 1.1) and my close buttons (an x in a circle) are not working in the published file I moved to a SharePoint Server. But my "jump to next slide" trigger is working. I also noticed my slide with 16 layers is acting glitch too. I tried to paste the URL in Google Chrome and it keeps redirecting the URL to open in IE...so I can't seem to test in chrome.

My training works fine when loaded to articulate online.

Hi all,

I realize this thread is a bit old, but I seem to be having something of a similar issue - though different in the specific circumstances.

I have a navigation menu built on a layer that shows when the user clicks a button on the base layer and then is hidden when the user clicks a button on the nav layer (via a timeline resume and hide at timeline end triggers). I'm using built-in animation for both actions. The first time you access and then hide the nav layer, it seems to work fine. BUT when you return to the base layer, the button to show the nav menu, and sometimes the base layer seek bar, are non-responsive. However, the built-in "previous" button is responsive. I'm baffled.

I had previously built the nav layer to move along motion paths and everything worked fine, but was running into issues with hot spots & grouped objects that way.

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious - maybe someone else knows what's at play?

Thanks in advance!

Caryn

Hi, Caryn -- Thanks so much for reaching out here! Perhaps it might be a bit easier for others to take a look and help diagnose what it happening with your file if you were able to upload it here. Please feel free to use the grey ADD ATTACHMENT button in the bottom of the reply box to share publicly, or if you would prefer private review, here is the form you would need to do so. :)

Hi, Caryn -- Thanks for uploading your sample file, and when testing your file via tempshare.articulate.com as seen here, I also had the same difficulty you are describing where you can click the "+" to show the Menu, but after you close it and click the "+" again, the Menu does not reappear. I'd like to recommend that our Support Engineers to take a bit of a closer look, but I was unable to locate your contact information in our system to create the ticket on your behalf, so here is the form you will need to submit a ticket. Sorry for the inconvenience, but if you are able to share your case number, we will gladly follow along!

Hi Guys,

I'm having the same/similar issue. I have a Storyline presentation with questions at the end and will probably be viewed both on iPad and desktop computer. Everything is fine until you get to the questions, when viewing on the iPad, via Safari or Chrome browsers. There are 2 attempts to answer each question, If you get the question wrong, the "try again" layer shows, the user clicks to try again and the created trigger "submit" button, on the base layer, stops working. I would appreciate if anyone had any ideas how to solve this problem. I'll attached a cut down version of the presentation with two dummy questions.

Thanks,

Bev
