Layers and JAWS

Hi

I have created three layers and when I view a layer, JAWS is reading content from the base layer while the layer is displayed even though the base layer is hidden on each layer.

I checked my focus order and all is ok for each layer - JAWS is also reading out 'checkmark 1' - I have applied this to a visited state on each of my three layers but can't locate this particular checkmark1 that JAWS is reading out to remove!

I've spent a lot of time trying to resolve this but completely stuck now on where to go next and would welcome some help.
