Layers

This may be a simple question, but I am very new to Storyline.  Sorry if it's basic.

I have a main menu that shows the buttons one at a time in order.  I want to have the learner return to the main menu after selecting a button and NOT have to wait for the entire menu to repopulate.  Should I use a layer with the main menu  that just appears? If that's the way to go, how do I get the slides to jump to that layer instead of the main slide?
