MacMini, VMwareFusion, Windows8, Preview freezes with USB speakers

May 22, 2013

Hey there folks,

I have a weird issue happening here. Can anyone tell me why Storyline is freezing when I try to run a preview with my Logitech USB speakers for laptop plugged in. After I click Preview, the loading symbol appears for a second or two and then just stops.  When I unplug the USB cable, it continues to load and then plays. But while they are plugged in, no dice.

Any suggestions on how to deal with this would be useful as I really need the speakers to hear the true volume of the audio that I've recorded. Mac speakers are very poor.

Thanks,

Greg

Hi Greg,

No idea why speakers would cause an issue with previewing. Wonder if there's some type of hardware or software conflict?

Have you tried working in other programs while the speakers are plugged in? Do you see any similar stalls, or other interference?

It might be a good idea to check the drivers for your speakers, if you haven't already. These are usually available on the manufacturer's website.

Also, and yes I know this sounds simple.. have you tried restarting the machine and confirming all of your project files are local?

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names (this includes spaces and underscores).

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

Let me know how it goes! :)

Thanks,

Christine

Thanks Christine.  Tried the things that you suggested to no effect.

After further research it seems that Windows 8 does not include generic usb audio drivers. It's not just Storyline that's freezing, it's everything.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Please kiv for other windows 8 users and let us know if you figure out a way to fix it. i will try and get something out of logitech.

Hi Greg,

I'm actually using Windows 8 on my primary machine, as well. I have noticed a bit of odd behavior when I use my USB headphones, but I don't have a pair of USB speakers to test on my machine.

I haven't noticed any freezing, thankfully, while using my headset. Do you have access to another pair of speakers - possibly a pair that isn't USB? Or maybe you could pick up a small set from a shop nearby. Maybe it would help to try a headset, instead, if you have a pair you could use?

Also - just had a thought - are you using a laptop or desktop? Have you tried using a different USB port? Are you using a USB hub by any chance?

Thanks!
