Max File Size

Nov 18, 2013

I've been working on an Articulate Storyline project for a month or two and it's going great. It's a rather big project, and the bigger it gets, the longer it takes to save and paint the screen when I change views. But it's working just fine. I work with Final Cut Pro quite  a bit, so big file sizes are the norm. Recently I noticed that my Storyline file size was about 1 GB. Again, everything works fine. A bit long to save, but no problems. Today I finally reached the last slide in the project. I think I heard champaign corks popping and fireworks exploding. Just before I went to publish to DVD, I saved the project. It's been saving for about an hour now. I checked the file size and so far it's about 1.1 GB. While I've been waiting, I decided to search Articulate support using the term "max file size," and I learned that the largest file size that is supported is 500 MB. Should I be worried? Will my project eventually save? Will I be able to publish it to DVD? What are the alternatives? I suppose I should have broken it into two or three files long ago, but it was working so well. Famous last words? Or, "What, me worry?"

Update: I left for an hour, came back and it was still saving. I thought it was doomed and then I went into the director and noticed two different file names, one of which was a temporary file. I double-clicked on the other and the project opened just fine with my latest changes. It saved! The other file is still saving too, so maybe I saved it twice? Lessoned learned? IDK. I have two more projects of equal size to create and I like it all in one file. Am I crazy?

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the update and I'm glad that the file eventually saved.

In regards to overall file size, there is a lot of talk about a "limit" but it seems to depend on the users individual settings, computer set up, memory, etc. It's generally a good idea with larger files to break it into smaller chunks just in case. Additionally I wanted to point you to this post on some great practices for larger courses.
