Media replacement/slide timeline not adjusting

May 08, 2014

I'm not sure if this issue is a function of the product or a bug.

I was re-purposing a course that required me to replace several videos. Some videos ran longer than the one I was replacing and the timeline adjusted to the new video length. However, if the video was shorter than the one I was replacing the timeline didn't adjust to the shorter video run time and the video is the only object on the slide.

I know I could change the triggers to point to the media but to maintain all targets I have the trigger pointing to the timeline so, I don't need to retype the object triggers; thus, saving me lots of time.

Any insight is appreciated.

Hi Barb,

The timeline will adjust, as you've seen if the new object is longer than the current timeline. However, it doesn't work the other way around.

Say your timeline is currently 2 minutes long and you add a new audio file that's only a minute and a half. The timeline isn't going to shrink down to the minute and a half time, because it was already set to a longer time. Storyline doesn't realize you're replacing an exiting video with a new one and new time, it's keeping the timeline time because it was set there for a reason initially - adjusting this downward would play badly if you had other objects on the timeline that went past the point of the new video.

If you put in videos that are shorter than the initial time, you'll want to click and drag the timeline so that it matches your video.

On the other hand, if you're having trouble adjusting the timeline so that it matches your new video, please let me know. I'd be happy to take a look! :)

Thanks!
