moving between fields in "try mode" of inserted screen record
Sep 11, 2018
I am developing a training for using a computer system, including demos of data entry screens. For each of my modules (scenes) I am including a "Try mode" version of each screencast demo.
I am trying to mimic the behavior of the system I am training to, which allows users to move between fields by using the Tab key. However, I cannot get this to function as expected in Articulate Storyline.
For each field that requires a typed value, I have it programmed to Submit by hitting the Tab key. That does properly submit the interaction and proceed to the next try mode slide. However, when it goes to the next slide, I'd like the cursor to automatically be in the text field in question, rather than requring the user to manually move the cursor there.
This DOES function as expected when previewing the course in Articulate Storyline. However when the course is published to Articulate Review or as SCORM file and previewed in our LMS - it does not function as expected. The Tab key does submit the interaction and proceed to the next slide. But the user then must manually move their cursor to the next field.
Is there any way to modify this course so that submitting the interaction will automatically place the cursor in the appropriate text field of the next slide, so that the user can just start typing?
Thanks!

Hi Ryan,
It sounds like you'd want the text entry to have the focus once on the next slide? Have you looked at where the text entry appears on the timeline? I know in the past it needed to appear at the bottom of the timeline.
If you want to share a copy of your .story file here (even just a few slides) I'm happy to take a look and test it as well.
Yes! Currently, the text entry is at the bottom of the timeline. And it does work correctly when previewed within Storyline, but not when published to Review or our LMS.
I've attached a portion of my course that includes some of the slides withose interactions. Thanks!
Hi Ryan,
I published a copy of this to Review here and the only change I made to test it out was slide 1.4 adjusting the tab order so that the text entry field was first. I compared that to slide 1.5, and both of them showed my cursor in the text entry upon visiting that slide.
I recorded a quick Peek to walk you through all this, so take a look and let me know what you think!
Hi Ashley,
This is great thank you.
I was able to determine that this fix does make it work as expected when reviewing the course in Chrome or Firefox browsers.
However, it does not work in Internet Explorer. When using IE, the cursor appears in the next text entry field, but the user cannot begin typing until they click there. Since Internet Explorer is the required browser for the company that I work for, do you have any advice about how to address this particular issue with this browser?
Thanks!
Hi Ryan. We have an issue documented where the focus of the slide is not being placed on a text entry field in Internet Explorer 11 when the course is hosted in Articulate Review. Can you tell if Ashley's fix will allow the focus to go to the text entry field in IE when you host the course in your LMS?
Let me know what happens and we'll keep banging away at it!
I have tested and verified that with Ashley's fix, the course does work correctly in my LMS, which also launches it in IE 11.
The only place it appears to be not working is in Review in IE 11.
Thanks!
Thanks for confirming, Ryan! We'll keep you posted on our progress with that bug in Articulate Review.
