When I go to animations, open the drop down for entrance, I see 5 options. I expand the drop down and just see 5. Is this true? They aren't even animations i usually use, except the flyin. I was looking for the "split" to open from the center first. Will this get more functionality in the future? or am I just missing something (I hope the latter).
This is a longstanding topic of debate ... and yes, the only animations you see are those in the tab. One hopes that with the next major release (in 2013? ) we'll see a few more of those effects we're used to dabbling with in PPT, e.g motion paths, wipe, etc. No guarantees as of yet.
Do add your weight to the argument though by submitting a feature request.
You're not missing anything. I know there have been a lot of feature requests for enhanced animations so I wouldn't be surprised if this is something we see enhanced in future releases. It appears they are working on fixing all the bugs as Update 2 that was released a few days ago focused on resolving a lot of the known bugs.
