New browser tabs in IE11 v Chrome

Oct 09, 2017

Hi,

We have a client that has come back with a question regarding opening up new browser tabs whilst our Storyline 360 project is playing.

In Chrome, if you open up a new browser tab whilst playing the course, all animation and voice-over pauses until you go back on to the project tab. Meanwhile in IE11 (the clients default browser) if the same thing is done, the voice-over continues, but the timeline stops, so when you return, the voice-over can be out of sync.

I appreciate that they should really be pausing before they tab away from the project, but since they have raised the issue, I would like to know if there is a way to control how a browser reacts to a new tab opening?

Hey Mark!

Sorry to hear that you've run into an issue with this.

We just released another update for Articulate 360, and included a few important fixes and new features that you'll see in the release notes here

This update fixes the issue in Storyline 360 where audio continued to play in the HTLM5 output when switching to another browser tab, which was causing some syncing issues.

Just launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer and click the Update button for each application. Details here.

Hi Leslie,

Thanks for the reply. As it happens, the course that the client viewed, was published a few weeks prior to this update. Since your response, I have republished the course in the updated Storyline and run into an issue.

The course is split in to five sections, each an individual .story file, which we package up before uploading to our LMS.

All sections have multiple slides, with video on some, and text/images etc on others. Some sections start with an standard slide, with maybe the second slide containing a mp4 video. These sections play fine. However, a number of the sections start with a slide containing video. With these sections, when played, the first video briefly flickers on screen, then vanishes. No voiceover can be heard (it is contained in the mp4).

If you wait until the slide timeline ends (timed to the length of the mp4), and go onto the next slide, all is fine, and returning back to slide one plays the video fine.

The previous publishes of this course (19/09/17) play fine with no issues, and no changes have been made to the files since then. Any ideas what may be up?

On a positive note, the update did fix my original opening issue of tab pausing...so thats good...

Regards,

Mark
