I have the next button set to be hidden when timeline starts on a slide. Then I have 6 markers on this slide that change to a visited state and take the learner to other slides to be returned to the original slide (3.1) after completion. I have a variable on the next button to change to true when the state of all 6 markers are visited and a trigger to change the state of the next button to normal when the variable is equal to true. It works in "preview this slide" (with warnings about not actually going to the 6 other slides) but not when I publish. What is up?

try changing your trigger second trigger - you want SL to check it when the timeline starts on slide 3.1 that all marker states are 'visited'.
