Preview/Temp files?

Jan 20, 2017

I've got a bit of a problem, a drive filled to capacity.  My workstation has three drives:

  • C: programs and operating system
  • D: & E: used for active project, project files, scratch and preview files, etc.

After Installing 360 the C: filled to capacity even though I was saving projects on the D: and E:.  Desktop support has asked me to find out if Storyline 360 writes temp or preview files where the program is installed?

Yesterday when trying to preview a file a pop up screen stated I had run out of disk space.  On the drive where the project is save I have over 400GB of open space, but on the drive where the program is located I now only have 4GB open.

I was expecting the processing to take place where I have the project files, but it seems like the previews are using the small C: where I just have the OS and program files.

If 360 is creating temp files is there an efficient way of clearing those?

In Adobe projects we can specify where temp files (scratch, preview, etc.) are saved.  Can we do the same with Storyline 360 files?

Hi there Bruce!

This is definitely one for our Support Engineers - they'll be able to help you troubleshoot based on your system set-up. And just in case, you'll want to be sure your system meets the requirements for Storyline 360 listed here

Since you asked about how to clear Temp files, here's how to do that:

  1. Open Windows Explorer, type %temp% in the address field, and press Enter.
  2. When your temp directory opens, press Ctrl+A to select all the temp files, then press the Delete key on your keyboard.
  3. A few temp files may currently be in use that can't be deleted. When prompted, you can skip those.

Once you open a case, you'll receive a case number. Please be sure to share that number with me so I can follow along, as well!

Hi Sonja,

We do keep some temp files as a part of the autorecovery process. If you're seeing these and Storyline has not crashed, I'd love to have you work with our Support team to help figure out what's happening with your set up.

If you do reach out, let me know and I'll follow along in your case too and update the forum discussion!

Hi Ashley,

this is an example (see attached) of my local AppData folder, where all the temp files are saved. I have to delete these files manually, if I don't want to keep them. Storyline has not crashed all these times.

Since SL3 I have big trouble saving my projects. I get two kinds of messages.

1. That my system run out of space and 2. the one, which I attached.
Then I look for the temp files to delete them, but I cannot find the folder. Only after restart windows, the folder is visible again and I can delete the files. Then saving works for 3-5 times, sometimes more...

Thanks Sonja for sharing the images here. I couldn't read the one error message you attached, nor copy it to translate it with Google, when do you see that error message? I haven't seen a Temp folder go missing before either, so I'm going to start you a support case so that our Engineers can take a look and work with you one on one.

Keep your eyes peeled for a message from Support@articulate.com!

Hi Jeff and Sonja,

We pushed out an update to Articulate 360 today and there was a specific fix to resolve the behavior where folks were finding unnecessary files stored in C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Articulate\360 and those preview files weren't being purged from the temporary folders.

Can you let us know how everything is behaving after installing this update? Just launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer and click the Update button for each application. Details here.

This update was a big one, and included a number of important fixes and new features that you'll see in the release notes here.

Please let us know if you have any questions, either here or by reaching out to our Support Engineers directly

Hi Ashley,

Seeing this already has a thread I thought I'd jump in.

I am consistantly having this problem while saving, my C: drive gets full and I find anywhere from 10-60GB of files in the storyline temp folder.

As i use a lot of other software, I would the absolute best option would be able to designate where the "Temp" files for articulate are stored. I have 7 drives as we do a lot of video and with all other software we split the files, the temp files and the Os to different drives for effeciency.

Is there any way to do this, or anything on the drawing board ?

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Hi Thesec,

What version of Storyline are you using? Our team has looked into a few other instances where these temp files aren't being purged, so I'd suggest working with them one on one to get to the bottom of this issue!

As for our plans on the drawing board, we don't have anything right now to change the location of these items or the .story file's need to be locally saved as well. We'll keep you posted if that changes!

Hi there,

I am working in Storyline through 360 and I, too, am experiencing some massive temp file creation. One file (109 MB) is creating 16.8 GB of temp files when I open it. Has this issue been reintroduced in Storyline 360? FYI I literally just updated Storyline today, so I know I'm running the most recent version.

Hi AShea!

Have you deleted any previous temp files that aren't currently in use? You'll want to make sure to delete previous temp files when working on big projects!

Your temporary files will be stored in %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline by default. You can actually delete any temporary files that aren't related to your current projects.

When your temp directory opens, press Ctrl+A to select all the temporary files, then press the Delete key on your keyboard.

A few temporary files may currently be in use that can't be deleted. When prompted, you can skip those.

Let me know if you run into any snags!

Lauren,

I just realized this issue yesterday as well. I have 360 and was getting storage error messages. They discovered over 30 GB of TMP files saved in the Articulate folder.  Is there any way for this to stop saving so many files? If i turn off the auto save option, will that fix the issue? I understand there is risk in doing so if one doesn't remember to save their work often, but the storage issues this causes is problematic

Lauren Connelly

Hi Greg!

Great question! There are risks in turning off Auto-Save, but it sounds like you have lots of temp files!

Before turning the Auto-Save option, I'd look at how often you're saving AutoRecovery information. The default time is 10 minutes.

Here's what it looks like in Storyline 360:

If you haven't noticed this with your temp files in the past, then we'll want our Support Engineers to step in. You can connect with our Support Team here.
