Problems playing interactive slides in iPad

Jan 07, 2014

Hi,

I have developed a module using Articulate storyline (Update 4: 1311.1422). The module uses a combination of video, audio and interactive (click to reveal) slides. I have published the module for LMS (SCORM 1.2) and hosted on Moodle 2.1. Below are some issues that i am facing -

1. Some of the interactive slide do not play well on iPad. eg - I have a slide which has series of questions (seven of them) that appears one after other. User has to click next after answering every question to be able to go to the next questions. This interactive works perfect on desktop however doesnt work on iPad. It keeps jumping back to question 1. Interestingly if i click exit button on this slide and click "no" to play the slide again then the remaining questions load properly. It seems that the interactive doesnt work on the first instance. I have tried everything possible but couldnt rectify this. Can you please help?

2. I have noticed that, all the audio files are by default converted to "Mono" type. This causes it to distort while i run the course from LMS. The audio slows down and get distorted. As a work around i am now replacing all the mono audio files with Stereo files manually in the published version. However as the file names are changed after a file is published in storyline, i am a hard time locating the correct files? Do we have a workaround for this? I need the audio files in Stereo format so that they dont get distorted. Again this issue is only with the iPad and couldnt be replicated on Desktops.

3. While Running the module on iPad, it automatically closes the Safari on few slides. It feels like the browser crashes at few instances. I checked the file size of such slides and it seems normal. The overall module size after publishing is not more than 75 MB.

Can you please help me with the above issues i am having with iPad? Do i need to publish the module in a different way so as to take care of such things on iPad. I repeat i dont see any of these issues on Desktop.

Regards,

Vishal

Support for mobile devices in the Moodle SCORM player is pretty bad in older Moodle versions - we did a lot of work on it in Moodle 2.6 so hopefully that will work better. Also Moodle 2.1 contains a range of known issues and is out-of-support. You should upgrade to a more recent supported version of Moodle.

If you want to use SCORM in Moodle on an iPad you definitely need to upgrade to 2.6

Hi Vishal and welcome to Heroes!

It looks like Dan answered you in regards to the Moodle piece, and we included a number of HTML5 fixes in update 4 (which you're already using). If it's an issue that you can replicate outside of Moodle, in SCORM Cloud for example or viewing the web published content on your iPad we're happy to take a look.

Thank you Dan, Ashley for getting back. Those comments indeed provide a direction to my thoughts.

As suggested I uploaded the module on my webserver and noticed that I still have the same issues with iPad. The Audio gets distorted and the interactive doesnt work well. I will now test the same module from SCORM cloud and let you know the results.

Having said that when i manually replaced all the Mono audio files with Stereo the audio issue was resolved. but it was crazy stuff replacing all audios manual especially when the file names has been randomized after publishing.

Hi Ashley,

I tested the module on SCORM cloud and i am facing the same issues there as well. The interactive slides exhibits the ssame issues as described above. Any idea as to how can i deal with this?

Just FYI - With this i have now tested the module on Moodle 1.9, Moodle 2.1, SCORM cloud and Webserver. All of them gives me the same issues.

Vishal

Hi Vishal,

Thanks for doing the additional testing. The only piece you didn't mention is what iOS you're viewing this on with your iPad, but if you're able to share the .story file here with us I'm happy to take a look. If you'd prefer to share privately or it's too large to post in the forums you can also send it along here.
