Quiz Answers (sometimes) disappearing when shuffled in HTML5

Jul 17, 2018

Haven't seen discussion on this and it's a tricky issue, so I'm starting this thread to gather info from other's experiences.

When viewing the HTML5 output, some learners have been unable to see answer choices in quiz questions where the answers are set to shuffle. They don't load and appear on screen.

The issue doesn't happen consistently for all learners. It mostly seems to impact Mac users on Safari, but also have seen it using Chrome on Mac and Chrome on PC. We have also seen where a viewer can see the answer options when viewing a screen through Articulate Review, but can't see them after the same slide is loaded into our LMS (Saba Cloud). I haven't been able to replicate it myself and have relied on feedback from others.

The quiz slides have been built as Freeform / Pick One using the most recent update of Storyline 360. After comparing to quiz slides that did work for impacted users, we isolated the issue on the Storyline side to shuffling the answers. However, we haven't yet been able to isolate the specific browser/user/OS settings that create the issue.

Hi Scott,

Sorry that you've run into an issue with this.

You described it well and it is an issue we are seeing in the HTML5 output related to certain question types that have a background graphic.

One of the easiest workarounds being to turn the shuffle off, so you're a step ahead.

This has been prioritized with our team and I'm adding this conversation to the report as we track user impact and so that we can update you here when we can.

Thanks for following up. Glad to know it is being looked into.

I imagine that this request must be made often, but a list of known issues that users could access would be really helpful. Myself and several people across several teams spent hours testing everything from individual browser settings, to LMS configurations, to Storyline settings. I even reinstalled Storyline in case it was a bug coming from my install.

A known-issues list would have saved us a bunch of time and effort. Better yet, it could have saved me from shuffling the answers in the first place and triggering the issue.

I know I could have contacted support to see if this was an known issue (and in retrospect probably should have and next time will). However, but this issue was super unclear on whether it was a Storyline issue, LMS issue, or individual user browser issue so I felt best to clarify the source of the bug before adding an additional support team to the mix. (Plus, I'm a hands on troubleshooter at heart.)

I hope the extra insight helps. Let me know if I can provide additional info about my experience with this bug.

Hey Scott,

I really appreciate you sharing that honest insight. You're right -- this was a really obscure bug, and it's tough to nail down where the culprit lies at first glance.

We don't keep a public list of known issues, but if you hit a roadblock, please let us know. We never want you to spend hours troubleshooting a problem alone. That's why our team is here to help in the E-Learning Heroes community! You can also reach out to our Support team anytime you suspect something is awry.

We're targeting to roll out a fix for this issue in the next update of Storyline 360, so we'll let you know as soon as it's live!
