re-enter numbers

Jan 10, 2014

Hi

I have a problem with numbers being entered into a box that the users are prompted by the narrator and balloon. If they enter the right numbers then hit enter, everything looks good and it goes onto the next slide.

If they type incorrect numbers an prompt comes up telling them and try again. This if fine BUT the user can't seem to type in the box again, it won't let me. If I go back to the previous slide then advance forward it works. What is up with this?

Also, the next slide works perfectly when I enter the numbers.

I have assigned unlimited tries and it is published for the web.

Hi Mikki,

I tried this with both the "numeric" question type, and a data entry field(numeric) that I converted to freeform and both ways I was able to change my answer after the first wrong answer. I had my slide properties to "automatically decide". If your course is behaving oddly you'll want to check the following:

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive).Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, includingfile corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory pathto your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters(for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents orsymbols in your file names.

If it's still behaving oddly and you'd like to share here in the forums we're happy to take a look. If you'd prefer to share privately, please let me know and I'll send you directions to send it to me.

Hi

I have the same exact problem with fill in the blanks and numeric slides. I've tried the 3 different slide options when revisiting, but can't retry, unless we navigate using the previous and next buttons. See attached one example. Note that it resets if we click next and then previous.

Hello Helene!

I took a look at the file and it seems you had these set up to allow only one attempt. If you would like users to go back and retry the questions, you can set the attempts per question to a set amount or unlimited:

By allowing this, the try again feedback box will allow users to go back to the slide and re type their answers.

Hi Emily

Thank you for your suggestion. We didn't want to add a try again button, to be consistent with the rest of the module. And even with a try again button, the rewind button still doesn't work, that is what the QA team picked up. We wanted the users to consistently be able to use the rewind button to start any slide from scratch.

I haven't had a chance to try what another user suggested last night, from another thread on a similar topic; I will try ASAP.

Hello Helene!

You can modify the Try again feedback layer to your own custom design with audio if needed. However, you will need to allow more than one attempt to get the rewind button to reset the course.

Attached is another example with slide one having unlimited attempts, no feedback layer, and the rewind button does reset. When you click submit, it will not show a layer, but the rewind button will reset. Slide 2 has unlimited attempts, with a custom try again feedback, when you hit try again it resets, and the rewind button resets as well.

Hello Emily

Thank you very much for your answer. I especially appreciate your efforts to show what the result could be. However, I tested the file and:

  • The first slide does rewind, but we can't type in the number again (my initial problem, unsolved)
  • The second slide has the same problem as before, if the answer is correct, it rewinds, but doesn't reset and we can't type in a new number (I know this is silly to rewind if you had it correct the first time, but it is an expected behavior of the rewind button). Also, if it is incorrect, the rewind button still doesn't work. They have to tap "Try again", so it's not consistent with the other questions.

In any case, the Rewind button doesn't reset the field... sniff... I will now try the other solution suggested by David Burton (https://community.articulate.com/discussions/articulate-storyline/reset-numeric-quiz

Hello Helene!

In the file attached above, the rewind button does reset the answer so you can enter it again. You can hit rewind before or after hitting submit. The only difference in the 2 slides was whether or not you use the Try again feedback, which isn't necessary, you would just need to allow more than one attempt per quiz slide.

I hope the suggestions in the link you provided can work for you!

Hi Emily

I played the file again and the incorrect and correct layers don't appear anymore. Yes, it rewinds but it doesn't display the feedback. So what I did was trying to fix this by adding a trigger to display the correct and incorrect feedback, and as soon as we have the layers appearing, the rewind button doesn't reset anymore.

What I did for my client was to add a try again and remove the seekbar to prevent users from clicking the rewind button. It's a compromise, it's not consistent with the other slides but so far, we have found no real way around it.

Thank you for your help!
