I am aware that when you record screens on storyline you can convert them in to try mode and test mode. I am wondering if with one screen recording, I can actually duplicate it and put it in as try mode and then again as test mode. Is this possible or do I need to do two separate screen recordings?
Yes, you can definitely reuse a screencast you've already recorded!
To insert an existing screencast, go to the Slides tab on the ribbon, click the Record Screen drop-down arrow, and select the screencast. Then select the option for how you'd like to insert it. Easy as that!
