References change font size

Hello,
I've been working on a course that uses a reference to enter text participants entered in a number of places. Each time when I use the reference is changes font size in the course. This is in the preview mode so not a browser issue (I think...). I've read a number of discussions on this topic and have not yet found any solutions. I've made sure the text boxes are set to do not autofit, have pulled the reference into a separate text box, and played with how many characters a text entry is limited too.
I'm using Storyline 3. Has anyone found the solution to this issue?

Additional to this, if you find that your text variables are sitting higher than expected, try setting your vertical alignment to 'Middle'.
