Reset Results Slide Trigger Allows Endless Attempts

Jan 25, 2019

Hi Team!
So this is quite interesting.
We have an exam for employees that is limited to one attempt.
However, due to some technical issues and lack of speed by our LMS in resetting exam attempts for us (we cannot reset attempts ourselves and they took about two weeks to rest his exam), we decided to add a trigger to reset the results slide.
We figured this would give us control to reset exams and we can do it in less than 30 seconds once we see the need for it.

Here's the new issue though. Once the reset results slide trigger is initiated, users can go in and take unlimited attempts. The exam appears reset every time they go into the course.

How can we stop this from happening?
The trigger we used is when: 'user presses a key.'

We have other exams limited to two attempts with a reset results slide trigger initiated by clicking a button. These exams function properly and once someone has taken two attempts, the exam is locked down for further attempts.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Philip,

That certainly does sound odd! I'd love to help you look into this. Can you tell me a little more about your setup?

  • What version of Storyline are you using?
  • What slide has the "when user presses a key" trigger?

Also, if you don't mind sharing your project file with me, I can test it in SCORM Cloud. That will help us to determine if the issue is related to Storyline or to your LMS.

You can send that file to me privately by uploading it here. I'll delete it when I'm done troubleshooting.

Hi Philip,

Thanks so much for sending over your file! Tell me more about how you restricted the quiz to two attempts.

It does look like you're using this method within Storyline, but I don't see that you've added this trigger to the result slide (from step 4 in the method linked above). Have you tried adding that trigger to the result slide?

Add a trigger to disable the Retry Quiz button

Hi Philip,

If you want to limit quiz attempts within Storyline, you'll want to follow the steps in this article.

Specifically, you need to add this trigger to the result slide (from step 4 in the method linked above): "Change state of Retry button to disabled when Timeline starts."

I also don't see that you've included a Retry button, so you'll want to add that to your result slide as well.

Hi Alyssa,

There is no Retry button because users only get one attempt at the exam.
The reason we have the hidden reset trigger is to give them another try if they have issues with their device/internet connection that messes up their attempt and locks them out. We've had this happen a few times.

Our LMS doesn't have a way to let us reset exam attempts on our own and their turnaround time on helping us with this has been very slow with mixed results as well.

So, we decided to add this as a hidden trigger for the global admins on our team to be able to help our learners quicker if their exam freezes and won't let them finish taking their exam.

We have the hidden reset results slide trigger on the first slide, not the results slide. The reason is that they may not have received a result if they weren't able to finish their exam.

How can we use variables or some other method so they cannot keep going back in and taking the exam multiple times after the reset?

Thanks in advance!
