Restricting course navigation

Feb 04, 2013

Hello,

Just getting my feet wet in Articulate and have an issue I'm hoping to get some help with.

My course needs to have the following criteria:

- scenesdo not change until audio voiceover ends, next button not available to skip pre-maturely

- questions are intermittently placed throughout about 150 scenes

- once a question slide comes up, the user should then be able to use the 'back' and 'next' buttons to move through the course to review the material, but not be able to click 'next' to move past that question screen

I've found that through the 'Player' you can remove the Menu and can pick scenes and set them as 'locked,' to not allow the user to move through the course until the trigger allows it.

Any way to allow going back and forth once a question is reached, but not move past it?

Thanks for the help!

Luke

Hi there Luke! Long time no read, I hope you're doing well :)

For the first reporting issue - this sounds very similar to an issue that was fixed with one of our updates. Can you please confirm you're running the most recent version of Storyline, please?

To find this information, click on "Help" and "About Articulate Storyline".

If you're not running version 3 (1305.2012), please download and install the update using the link below:

Articulate - Storyline Update 3

Once you've finished installing the update, please republish and test your course in Articulate Online. Hopefully, this will fix the issue of the score showing 100% and incomplete, If not, please let me know.

That update, if you aren't using already, may also improve the functionality of the course. That's something we'd want to check out, too, if you can test it as well.

For the Anonymous user issue;

It sounds like your content might not be set to be private. Have a look at this article on tracking users with Articulate Online.

Make sure your content is set to private. That way, users will need to input their email and password when accessing your content. My guess would be you're using a Guestbook that prompts for name (not necessary with private content), but content is not private.

I hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.

Thanks very much, Luke!

Christine

The update was needed and has cause the courses to run more smoothly.

I set up my own gmail account to test the other issues after setting the course to private.

If I set up a User Portal for my gmail, I can run a successful report now - but the course still shows as incomplete.

If I simply email the link to my gmail, I do not get any administrative report to generate after completion.

I'm still a bit thrown off by there being the built in NEXT/PREVIOUS buttons on the bottow right of the Submit slide.  Doesn't just reaching that slide submit the answers of the questions?  It does not appear listed in the sidebar Menu...

Christine Hendrickson

Hi there Luke! I hope you had a great weekend :)

That's great! I'm very happy to hear that the update improved the performance for you. I know that has to be a big weight off of your shoulders.

For the buttons, did you have any additional slides following the "Submit" page previously? Are there any triggers for the "NEXT" button still on the slide? Are you able to disable the options for the navigational buttons at all on that slide?

For the reporting and if you still have trouble with the buttons, it might be best if we can take a look. Can you share the file with us?

Thanks again, Luke!

I just tried changing the Slide Nav controls via Story View for the Results Slide.  I altered it to have Submit checked and Prev/Next un-checked.

When I click Submit, I get a message showing, "INVALID ANSWER, You must complete the question before submitting."

So I'm still missing something.

I uploaded the file a few minutes ago.

Christine Hendrickson

Good morning Luke,

I took a look at the file you shared in case 00335870. Looks like there was just a slight mistake on the "Submit" trigger. Currently, the trigger is set to "Submit Interaction", this trigger is actually one that's used for a quiz, not for submitting the results of the quiz. This is why you're receiving that error message.

So, you'll want to change that trigger to use the "Submit results" action as shown below:

Can you try that out and let me know if that works for you, please?

Thanks again, Luke!

Hi Christine,

I'm working on this one and my project manager made this request - we want the passing grade percent to be 70% and we want them to be able to see that in a manner that is not a percentage, but rather reads something like, "5 out of 5 correct."

I'm still working on the other pieces right now and will follow up ASAP.

I'm trying to wrap this up today/tomorrow as it is going live on Monday!

Thanks for all your help.

Luke Anderson

Hi Christine,

We are up and running with our first course.  So far, so good.

Thank you very much for all your help on this, literally could not have done it without you.

Here's another brain teaser, when a user completes the course in a few different pieces, the report picks them up separately.

I definitely see the benefit for having a report for partial progress, but is there any way to gereate a report for the full course as well even if the user completes the course in a few separate parts?

Thanks!

Luke

Hi there Luke!

Very happy to hear that the course is going well and I'm so glad I could help :)

For your latest question - is this for the same course? Looking at the current tracking settings, you have "Complete/Incomplete" and to communicate the completion "On Course Complete" and the tracking is set for the results slide.

I believe with that combination of reporting, it's going to keep watch over the progress of the course at first, not the overall status, until the user completes the entire course.

Is this what you're still using for the course? What report status are you currently seeing when the partial results are sent?

Thanks!

Luke Anderson

When you refer to "tracking settings,"  where do I see how those are set?

And this is referring to the larger course, the one I uploaded for your review was a smaller portion, but I don't believe I'd changed any tracking settings that I was aware of.

The reports I see will show varying duration lengths with statuses of incomplete as the user leaves the course and then comes back later to pick it up.

Christine Hendrickson

Hi Luke,

So sorry for the delay.

Right - they're going to display different statuses as they complete portions of the course if it's using that tracking option. However, it should populate the final result and status when they actually complete the course.

To see what options you're using, click on "Publish". If you're still using Articulate Online, select the link next to "Tracking:" under the "Reporting" section.

If you're using a different LMS, click on the link next to "Tracking", or use the "Reporting and Tracking..." button in the lower right-hand corner.

Can you tell me if you're still using the same as the original file?

Thanks!

Luke Anderson

Here is an example.  This confuses me because the first start was at 9:14am and it has a total of almost 3 hours, which is about as long as the course goes.  But the top listing shows that 152/153 slides were viewed... One shows almost full time, the other shows almost full slide viewing...

I will look into the settings.

Here are my settings (this is not the exact same course as the one I uploaded previously, it is a larger version):

REPORTING:

Report status to AO as - COMPLETED/INCOMPLETE

Communicate resume data - ON COURSE COMPLETE

Building on the above comment from June 5, I really do like knowing about partial activity, especially helpful if a user encounters technical difficulty.

But it would be ideal if there was a master report result that shows the entire completed course, both in time, and questions answered.

Currently, I have 35 questions in my course.  If a user does the course over three different sittings, I would see a report that shows the score as a percentage for each separate portion of the course overall.  Better would be to show the number correct vs the number attempted but still showing incomplete.  Also, instead of keeping my question numbers, if they stop after question 10, and rejoin the course the next day, there is a second report created, with the first question shown to me as "question 1."  Really, that is question 11 of this course.

Further, once a course has been started, then left, then returned to, the user is asked if they want to restart from where they left off.  I would prefer it if the report would not start another entry for the continued course, but added to the existing report.

Christine Hendrickson

Hi Luke,

All very valid and sensible points - thanks for taking the time to write that out.

Quite honestly, I can see how you'd benefit from that type of reporting, or at least some additional options for the data that's displayed when a course is revisited.

I believe the points you made would make for an excellent feature request. We love seeing these type of suggestions, especially when they are so well-written and descriptive. If you have a chance to do so, I would recommend sending this information over to our development team:

Articulate - Submit a feature request

Thanks again, Luke!

Leslie McKerchie

Hi Luke!

I cannot tell you what the status of your feature request is.  Be the first to know about our updates and releases by following our blog.

You can see the data that the user provides via Content > Manage > Reports as shown below:

As far as having an issue with your slides loading, perhaps you should submit a case so that our support team can look into that issue.

Hope this helps and have a great day!

Luke Anderson

Following up, I checked on the instructions you gave above, and I need help on something.

If I follow your steps, I find a report that is much more limited than the categories that I have actually set my guestbook to read.

My Guestbook is set to gather: eMail, First, Last, Phone and 3 custom categories.

But on my report I will either see that I had zero views for a course that my Content screen shows 22 views, or, on another course I will be able to generate a report, but I will not get the criteria I indicated above, I only get First, Last, Job Title (blank and I don't have it set in my criteria) and Company.

Can you help?

Leslie McKerchie

Luke - If you click on the Reports Tab at the top it takes you to what looks like a bunch of tutorials about reports.  If you scroll all the way to the bottom, you will see this:

You can click on the Custom Report and pick the fields that you want to report on and make it match your guestbook requirements if you'd like.

I hope this helps you

Luke Anderson

That report step was very helpful, thank you.

Another item here - I just tested my course on an iPad for the first time and was very pleased with it.  It prompted me to download the app which I did.

That got me to thinking that I could try it on my iPhone.  I set up my gmail account in People > Articulate Online, and when I opened the welcome email, clicked the link, the following happened:

- I was not prompted to download an app and when I searched "Articulate" in the app store, I didn't find it.

- I launched the course in the browser with no app needed and it ran a bit slow on my WIFI, but I have the iPhone 4 - might be part of the problem.  But when it started up, I was allowed to click through the menu to any slide I wanted even though that course has menu-seeking shut down.

Any idea why that could be?

Thanks,

Luke

Leslie McKerchie

Hi Luke! Glad that reporting information helped you out.

So, the Articulate Mobile App is specific for the iPad, and is not an iPhone app so it makes complete sense that you were not prompted nor could you find it in the App Store.

I'm assuming that you published the content for HTML5 output, and unfortunately your player restrictions are not fully supported in HTML5 format as you can see here.

Hope that helps
