Safari Browser very poor image quality

Sep 07, 2020

Does any one have an answer for why the Safari Browser replays certain images in such low quality. I have published many Storyline projects and don't seem to have this happen in the past.

A storyline project which has upwards of 400 hundred images which I have recently published plays well in Microsoft Edge and Chrome Browsers, however when played in the Safari Browser a small number of the images are very blurry and not acceptable.

I have attached a small screen recording of the comparison with Microsoft Edge, Chrome and then Safari.

This is also a problem when played on an iPhone when using via LMS mobile eLearning Apps.

Should we now be recommending to our online students not to use any of our Storyline content in Safari.

Appreciate any help and advice

Regards Peter

That's interesting. It looks like a different image altogether. Do you have experience with using the developer console? It would be interesting to look at the image that is being loaded in Safari, and then view the image in isolation in the browser (direct URL to the image that is poor quality). You don't have any quirky zoom settings on the Safari browser do you?

What are the dimensions of your Storyline file? I'm guessing it is pretty big, as you look to have a high resolution display setting, and image quality isn't degrading in other browsers.

Sam, I don't have any experience with using the developer console (I am not
sure what that is?)

The images that are showing up poorly are tif files taken from another
destination on my computer than those that are showing up well within
safari. All other files are png and a few jpg files.

I am not that computer literate to know how to isolate any of the images
and then create a URL that can then be opened in the Safari and other
Browsers. Happy to take some advice or guidance though.

The Story size is 720 x 405 (16:9).

I am unsure about any Safari zoom settings, though I have checked it out on
another Mac computer and the outcome is the same as it is if I run the
files from my LMS on a mobile LMS app using my iPhone 11.

So I am now wondering if Safari doesn't like tif files.

Very keen for any advice.

My LMS people have let me know that they always strongly recommend that
Chrome of Fire Fox be used as the preferred browser for any content. The
LMS we use is Canvas.

Ok, you might find that Safari will work ok once the project is viewed via http rather than running locally. Have you tried running via Review 360 to see how Safari handles the files? It's not right that Safari is grabbing images from another location on your computer, but it may be as a result of running locally. I'm not sure about this one, but definitely give Review 360 (or Canvas) a go.

Happy to take a look on my system as well if that help, see if I can figure out what is going on.
