Screen capture videos cutting out

Jun 02, 2014

Hi all,

I have been experiencing a big issue related to video playback. The screen capture videos taken within storyline will sometimes complete and advance to the next slide. However, sometimes they will cut out early and the 'advance to next slide' trigger will not activate. The learner will be stuck on this slide.

It only happens about 25% of the time and occurs with all screen capture videos and some downloaded from youtube. However, all of our in-house made videos do not display this issue. They are inserted into the course as .wmv files.

I am completely lost and would really appreciate the help of this excellent community.

I cannot attach the example of the .story file due to uploading restrictions from my work terminal.

Thank you in advance for your assistance

Hi Martin,

I'm sorry to hear about the odd behavior you're experiencing with your .story file and the videos. I have some additional questions and thoughts on things you'd want to look into:

Are the screen capture videos ones you've recorded in Storyline? When you say they "cut out" do you mean they stop playing or disappear from the screen? Is the advance to next slide trigger set to advance when the media completes or when the timeline ends? If the latter,  you may want to turn on the seekbar to help you see that the timeline has ended and the slide is not advancing. Have you tried adding in new triggers to advance?

How have you inserted the YouTube videos?

I'd also suggest checking into the following:

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive).Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, includingfile corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory pathto your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters(for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents orsymbols in your file names.

If this is only occurring in one file, I'd suggest importing that file into a new project to try and resolve any issues with the file itself. If it's happening with a number of Storyline files it may be worth conducting the repair of Storyline.

Many thanks for your suggestions. We have found a strange workaround.

We were using a 'play' icon on tiop of the video to play the video (icon would become hidden when clicked). Removing this icon and setting the video to play automatically has fixed the problem. The screen capture videos no longer cut out.

Any ideas why this may be?

I ask because we prefer learners to click the video to launch because they are exercise demonstrations.
