Second quiz try hangs on results slide

I am having issues with a quiz-only project hanging when showing the results slide after a second attempt on the same quiz. Many thanks, in advance, for insights on how to fix this!

Project: Six 20-question tests, each drawn from a bank of 50 questions. Learner must score a pass on each test, and receives unlimited tries to do so. Scores are recorded manually; no LMS interaction needed. (Developed in Storyline 360.)

Issue: On the first try, a fail correctly shows the failure layer. Clicking on the "Retry Test" button restarts the test as expected. At the end of the second test session, where the results slide should pop up, the spinning loader wheel runs endlessly. This occurs regardless of the pass/fail results on the second try.

Tried the following and retested via FTP upload, but these revisions have not fixed the problem or (detectably) changed anything:

  • I've reset the results slide to reset to initial state.
  • I've moved "Submit results [Test_01_Results] When timeline starts" to top of the stack of results slide triggers.
  • Tested in both Chrome and IE11.

Hello there!

A few folks here reported an issue where a course could freeze or lock up when retrying a quiz from a question bank. Specifically, when viewing the content on Chrome.

Well, that issue is now fixed in Update 25 for Storyline 360. Check out what's inside here, and here's how you can update Storyline 360 to see those goodies! 🎁

Hello ! 

Updating this topic because I'm having the same issue with Storyline 3 build v6 3.6.18.181134.0. Will rolling back to the previous version fix the issue for me too ? 

In my testing, I have troubles loading the result slides when I'm coming back to a quiz which I left in the middle of one attempt. Everything is doing fine otherwise, this issue only appear when connecting multiple times to the same quiz (question bank, random selection).

Hi Maxime!

Sorry you are still having trouble! We haven't heard of any issues after releasing the latest update for Storyline 3.

The first thing I would check is to see if your users are given multiple attempts to take the quiz? I can see where an issue would arise if you are trying to return to the quiz slide and have already taken the quiz once. I'll link an article on changing the number of attempts.

Hello Lauren,

You can find the scorm and the story in attached documents. I have sucessfully recreated the issue on Scorm Cloud, so I don't think this is something related to my LMS.

Steps to do

1. Launch the course and do the 1st attempt while managing to fail the quiz (only one good answer). You'll get the result slide and your score, then click on "Recommencer".

2. Either leave the course here (introduction slide) or on a question slide, then reconnect to the course. You'll get back where you left, but eventually you are likely to get a crash, resulting in the current attempt to fail (you get 0% score).

Some informations on my course

There are 5 variables True/False to track the number/current attempt. After 5, they can't take the quiz anymore.

I did a little "History" of the scores : those are the variables on the result slides called "Scoretentx". They are only cosmetic.

Everthing is doing well if all the question in the question bank (select "All" in the configuration panel) are selected. No crash, I can leave and take the quiz back without any problems.

Thank you for sharing your files with us! 

I tested your output in SCORM cloud as well and did notice similar behavior. I did find that if I didn't leave the course after failing the quiz, I was able to run through all five attempts without the course crashing.

If I did the following steps, I would notice similar behavior to what you are seeing:

  1. I would run through the quiz and fail
  2. Click on Recommencer and then exit the course
  3. Resume the course to re-attempt the quiz 

Majority of the time the course would resume just fine. I only had a few instances where the course would either crash on me or would report a 0% score.

Hi all, I'm having an issue and I'm not sure if it's related to this or not. I have the most recent update for Storyline 360 and have created a 15 question quiz. On the results slide, the user can choose to Review the quiz or Retry the quiz. When publishing to Articulate Review, this works seamlessly, and the user can go through the quiz as many times as desired. When publishing for LMS, however (SCORM 2004, 3rd edition), the quiz works normally on the first attempt, but as soon as the user closes the first attempt and re-launches it on the LMS, it gets finicky. (Although Retrying the quiz from within the first attempt seems to be working.) When relaunching the quiz from the LMS for a second attempt, the "Submit" button on the second question stops working, so the user can't proceed forward in the quiz (the questions themselves only have the Submit button, not the Next and/or Prev buttons). Any ideas about whether or not this might be related, and what I should do?

There could be a hidden interaction on a layer causing the Submit button to break. I'd love to take a closer look at your .story file to test this theory and help nail down what's causing that behavior on the second question slide. Would you be willing to share it with me?

Hi Marcia!

This one is a tough one to solve without seeing the project. I can see where triggers and conditions could cause the submit button to stop. In most cases this happens when triggers are overlapping.

if you are running Moodle my experience is, if the activity is closed, after clicking the Submit button and without clicking a Retry Quiz link, the learner’s results are sent to Moodle. The attempt is closed and cannot be re-opened/resumed,  as Moodle has received a completed message etc ...in the interactions report for the user....cmi.completion_status = completed, this is flagged regardless of failing or passing the quiz.

You may also be entering "Review Mode".. these words appear at the top left of the window, the quiz seems to work, but it just goes round in and endless loop, not updating any score etc.

That is also why "Retrying the quiz from within the first attempt seems to be working", the attempt has not be flagged completed on Moodle.... that happens when the Submit button is finally clicked.

Not sure if there is a way around this?
