When text is inserted into the caption boxes, the text has a shadow that can make it hard to read. The shadow disappears when the cursor is clicked inside the box.
The shadow remains whether the box has an fill or not..
Can this shadow be removed or is this a default that cannot be changed?
The shadow on text in caption boxes is the default setting however you can remove this shadow very easily. Just highlight the text and click on the S symbol next to the standard underline/italic/bold symbols in the 'home' tab.

Can we change a setting so that the shadow doesn't appear in the first place? Yes, I can go through and manually remove the shadow. But, can I change whatever setting puts it there to begin with? Thanks in advance!
The shadow is applied by default within the caption boxes, so there isn't an option to stop that. If having this ability is something that would improve your experience using Articulate you can submit a feature request here!
