Short Answer Text Box/Results Slide

Jun 24, 2021

Hello,

I don't know what's going on with this file. I inserted buttons to advance the slides. Now,  the short answer slides will not advance once text is entered. Also, it appears that I may have two results slide and don't know how that happened. I attached the file. Any help that you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Cheryl

Hi, Cheryl!

I have to be honest: I was a little confused by the way you set up your file.

  • You have two Results slides, but the first one (the second slide from the top) is a title slide. If you look at the settings on that slide, you can see your two short answer questions are assigned to that Results slide.

  • You have three Pre-Quiz questions, but the responses are not submitted on the first two, only on the third.
  • On your Post-Quiz questions, you had two triggers for your submit button:
    • Submit the question
    • Submit results

The default setup is to submit the results on the results slide. Is there a reason why you set it up this way?

  • Your Results slide (1.20) is not set up to show the results. It's only an ending slide.

Do you want the user to see their results from the quiz? Will you be using a Learning Management System, therefore needing to track and report the results?

I'll be able to help a little better once I have more information on what you're looking to accomplish.

Several thoughts come to mind:

1. Yes, you should delete one of the Results slides

2. Results slides need be submitted only once. Set the Quiz options of the Result slide, and it will collect all those answers.

3. I notice your Next Buttons are a button, overlaid with a text box. This doubles your work, and can increase your problems, too. If the learner clicks exactly on a text part, nothing is triggered. It's better practice to create a button, and edit the text on it, so the text is part of the button. I, personally, don't use buttons, because of all the baggage (mostly states I don't want) they bring. I use a shape with text and color.

4. the short answer questions have a trigger to submit. You need to decide what you want to do with those answers. As it is, there are no actions for Correct, Incorrect, or Try again, so you didn't get the corresponding built-in layers and triggers. There are no triggers to jump. You can go to Form View, and create a response, and use that layer to jump. Or you can just add a jump to next slide trigger to the Submit button. Be sure the jump trigger is in the list after the submit trigger, or it will not be submitted.

Maria,

LOL... I was confused too. I had no intention of creating two results slides. I'm a bit of a novice and I was experimenting and went down a rabbit hole. I saw that I had two results slides, but couldn't figure out where it was coming from. The pre/post quiz questions and course evaluation slides should all link to one results slide. Here is my intention.

Pre-quiz= No feedback for the user, but we want to records the user's answers.

Post-quiz= Feedback for the user and record the user's answers.

Results slide= We will not be giving the user a score. So, I deleted all of the information that would typically be seen on the results slide and usually provide some relevant information.

We will be uploading this module to a learning management system. We will extract the data from our LMS.

I'm guessing the best way to get myself out of this mess is to start by deleting one of the results slides. Right? Please advise.

I appreciate your help.

Thanks Walt! Yes, those buttons are causing me trouble. I only used them for consistency throughout the module. I needed them for the slides with animation. I didn't know how to prevent the user from clicking next before all of the animations had played. I can try your recommendation of just using a shape with text and color.

Hi, Cheryl.

Thank you for clarifying what you're trying to accomplish!

Here are a few changes I made to your .story file (attached below):

  • Deleted the first Results slide (1.2) after copying its content to a new blank slide.
  • Connected all the questions to the last results slide (1.20).
  • Deleted the Submit Results triggers from each of the questions and the feedback layers.

I also tested your project in SCORMCloud (using SCORM 2004) and was able to get a report of all the questions:

Let me know if this works!

Hi Maria,

Thanks so much for your help. There seems to be one hiccup with Post-question #3. The slide will not advance after selecting an answer choice. The tirggers seem to be different than the other post-questions. Other than that, it works great! I attached the project. I did remove the arrows so that each slide only advances when the button is selected. This could be the culprit. Again, thanks for your hard work and patience.

Hi, Cheryl.

You're very welcome! I'm glad we're getting closer to what you have in mind!

I didn't notice the issue with Post-quiz #3 at first because it's dependent on where you click, as the top half of the button is being covered by the last option of the multiple choice. But, as Walt mentioned above, because you have a textbox and a button, it can cause problems.

A quick fix is to make sure they're together and on the top of the timeline:

However, a better solution, echoing Walt's suggestion, is to either edit the text of the button or create a shape as the button. When you insert a new button, you can type the text directly on it:

I hope this helps!
