Size Distortion

Dec 19, 2012

Hello,

I have recently run into a problem while sharing a Storyline file that I have never run into before.  For this particular project I changed the story size to a custom height and width, and then went about making the presentation.  On my computer everything played perfectly, and none of the elements overlapped or were cut off on the bottom of the screen.  When I sent the Storyline file to another person, however, it was reported that some of the words were cut off on the bottom of the screen, and many of the images overlapped with the text.

After hearing about this, I did some research on your site and found a discussion about modifying the player settings, so I did this, but the file is apparently no different when viewed on other computers (on my computer everything appears fine).  I even published the file to see if there was a discrepancy, but that too looks normal on my computer.

Is there perhaps a setting for this?  Any help you could provided would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

Amanda

Hi Amanda. Welcome to E-Learning Heroes!

If the project shows up correctly on your machine, but not on your colleague's machine, it may have something to do with a setting on their machine. It sounds to me like it may be related to an issue with DPI.

You might want to pass this information along to the person you're working with, so they can check the settings:

Storyline will function as expected when Windows is set to 96 DPI (dots per inch).

Storyline does not currently support 120 DPI. If your system is set to 120 DPI, you may experience erratic behavior, such as:

*  Elements of the application are misplaced or distorted.

*  Objects are misplaced or distorted when previewed or published.

*  Zoomed images don't work as expected.

Here's how you can switch to 96 DPI:

Keep in mind, this is if they're are working with the project files, not content that's been uploaded to a server, etc. Also, try to make sure that they are viewing the content locally. Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior. You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate). Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names.

Thanks!

Hi Amanda!

Thanks for getting back to me

You may also want to check and make sure that the other person viewing the files has installed the most recent update for Storyline.

Here's some more information:

Is the top or bottom of each slide cut off when you preview or publish your Storyline project? We've found that this can occur if you customized the player while using the original software release of Storyline, and then you later installed Update 1 for your Storyline software.

This issue was corrected in Update 2 for Storyline. To take advantage of the new features and fixes, download and install the latest version of Storyline from the link in your product confirmation email, or get it here. Then republish your Storyline project.

Let me know if this resolves the problem for them!

Thanks :)

Hi Christine,

I have installed update 2, as has the other person looking at this presentation, but the problem still persists.  She has looked at the lesson both in the preview function, as well as in the published file, but on her computer (and at least 1 other that I know of) some of the text appears to be cut off at the bottom and the images at the bottom of the screen overlap the text in the middle of the screen.

I have customized the player to a setting of 1075 by 622, but I have used this setting before without any difficulty.  Since this has happened we have viewed other Storyline files from different people in our company and none of these issues seem to be present. It is, for some odd reason, only from this one presentation that we are seeing problems.  But, the settings here are identical to all other presentations I have created in the past 5 months.

Currently, I am at somewhat of a loss as to what could be causing this issue, but it is becoming increasingly concerning.

Thank you for your help with this!

Hi there Amanda!

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm starting to wonder if this might be related to the Microsoft Update that came out earlier this month. I know it sounds strange, but it seems that it's an issue with certain fonts. The reason it may be happening in this presentation and not other's might be because of the text. As time goes on, we find that this update has effected some rather strange elements of text, so I'm wondering if this is related. You might want to try taking a look a the article we put up on this, try uninstalling the update if it's there and see if that changes anything.

If removing the update doesn't change the display for the presentation, we may need to take a closer look at the file. Would you mind submitting a support case with our tech team, so we can test the files? You should be able to attach the .story file on the second page of the form. If you'd like, you can also share the link to this thread, so our tech team can see all the steps you've taken to troubleshoot the issue. Also, if you can, please share the case details with me, so I can follow the progress of the case and update this thread.

Thanks very much, Amanda!

Christine
