Microsoft only did that when they released a non-compatible version change (2007 I think). Before that. it was always .doc for previous versions. Have you had any issues opening SL 1 files with SL 2?
I agree - it's tricky to tell, so what I typically do is try to open first in SL2 as if it is an SL2 file it'll open right away, and if not I'll see the message to upgrade the file. If you do it the other way and try to open an SL2 file in SL1, you'll receive the error message about it being created in a newer version - which is also a common error message when people have been working with files off a non-local drive - so therefore could cause more of a headache.
