SL2 Crashing repeatedly

Sep 29, 2017

Today I've been working on a relatively small (14 slides) SL2 file.  I've recorded narration, added cue points and adjusted animation timings. Several slides have multiple layers, but nothing fancy. The file is on my hard drive and has never been moved from my hard drive.  Thus far it has crashed about 8 times with no rhyme or reason for the crash and no consistency of action taken just before the crash.  I have restarted the computer in hope that there was an update lurking behind the scenes that needed to complete, but this didn't solve the problem. Fortunately I'm saving frequently, but it is a bother! Anyone else having this issue?

Hey Katelin!

Sorry to hear that you're having difficulty with this.

Is this within the same file or does it happen in any file you are working with?

Curious if the issue happens in any course you are working on or just this particular one?

If you cannot re-create the issue in a new course, I would advise to import the file into a new one and proceed.

If it's happening in any/all files, you should certainly conduct a repair of your software.

I was able to track down one issue related to audio and the steps to recreate are documented as follows:

Steps:
1. Go to Insert -> Audio -> Record Mic.
2. In the Record Mic dialog, click Import Audio File -> Select Audio -> OK.
3. Click Edit Audio icon.
4. In the Audio Editor dialog, click Record button to invoke Record Mic dialog once more.
5. Click the Import Audio icon -> Select Audio -> OK.

Does this sound like the process that you are following as well when experiencing the issue?

You are both welcome to work directly with our support team here. They can check logs and get a little more in-depth if needed since you've already gone through some troubleshooting.

No - That's not my experience.  I'm using "record mic" and recording directly into the SL2 file onto my hard drive. Problems sometimes begin after the first recording, and sometimes not until later.

I almost always have to edit the recorded audio because the microphone picks up the mouse click when I stop recording. That extra sound must be edited out of each track, but again, the crashing sometimes begins with the first added audio and sometimes not until much later. It's really frustrating and is causing rework if I forget to save after each inserted recording.

The issue was the same for me - SL2 crashing - but not for any fixed reason like only working with audio. I did all the usual list of possible solutions, but the one that worked, though far from ideal, was uninstalling the adobe update from Sept 19th. It was a suggestion from this discussion a few weeks ago:

It's the second time SL has not made timely fixes to problems with Adobe updates - it happened a year or so ago as well. We shouldn't have to compromise our systems by not installing updates in order to use this software.

At the very least we should be advised that it's a potential issue that you're not going to bother fixing for SL2. Very disappointing.

At any rate, it has stopped the crashing for the moment. Good luck!
