Slide count and TinCan

Apr 23, 2014

Hello,

I need a little help understanding how a Tin Can environment looks at the slide count when quiz bank questions are built into a course. My course has several points where the learner answers 7 questions randomized from a quiz bank. How does the SCO communicate this interaction in Tin Can? Does it count each question as a slide?  If this is the case, do I need to increase the number of slides in tracking when publishing the content in order to accurately trigger the learning objective as complete in the LMS? Or, does it see the quiz bank slide as one slide in the total slide count when publishing?

Currently working in Moodle 1.9 transitioning to TOPYX very soon both use Tin Can

Thank you

Barb

Hi Barb,

I did a test on my own files, as I hadn't tried this before. I set up a Storyline file with an initial slide, a question bank/draw with three questions, and then a final slide (so a total of 5 slides). I then looked at the tracking requirements and saw I could only track by number of slides viewed and had options 1, 2 or 3 slides (treating my question draw as one slide).

I published the course to SCORM Cloud, and did a quick test where I visited the first slide and then went to the first question slide and then the second question slide, and closed the browser. It tracked my attempt as being complete - which I technically saw three different slides, but it seems counter intuitive to what you set as a tracking requirement. I've reported this to our Quality Assurance team for review, but I can't offer a time frame for when this will be fixed, so in the meantime I'd suggest implementing another tracking method. You may want to look at tracking my viewing a particular slide as described in this article.

Thank you Ashley, here's the back ground as to why I'm asking.

The course is a video based course with a series of questions needing to be asked after each segment. There are at least 7 segments ranging from 5 minutes to 35 minute of video time. I want to have all this content in one Storyline package. Since we'll be moving to TOPYX they have specific publishing steps for Storyline and that includes publishing the content  with the tracking looking at the number of slides.

Hi Ashley,

You might want to pass this along. I was previewing a project today and as the preview was setting up it indicated it was processing 67 slides when I only have 25 slides. The other 42 slides are the questions being pulled from the quiz bank. When I go to publish the project to SCORM the tracking is only looking at the 25 actual slides and will not allow me to change that number to reflect 67 total interaction slides.

Hopefully this makes sense.

Hi Barb,

That's expected as the questions within the question bank count as a slide during publish and when you view the published output. That's why I reported to our QA team that when setting it up to track by slides viewed, the question bank slide draw is only counting as 1 slide even though when you run the published output all those question bank slides will count as individual slides towards your total.
