I created a variable on a slide master that shows the slide count, which works great on normal slides, but it doesn't show up above the recorded slides (it's a software simulation). Are master slides not able to show any objects over a recorded slide or am I missing something?
I had a similar thing, but not sure if it's the same. Have you tried right-clicking on the slide, selecting Format Background, and de-selecting Hide background graphics?

I am noticing the same issue myself -- was there ever any resolution to this issue?
