Storyline background image lightens when previewed/published?

Nov 25, 2013

I'm having a bit of an issue... while working in Storyline editing my course, my background images look like this:

When I preview, publish, or otherwise view my course, the background looks like this:

I am using the "Velocity" background and one of the default color schemes. Any ideas why the background is changing, and how I can get it to look like the first image?

Hi Britne and welcome to Heroes!

I tried setting up my slide with the background and colors you mentioned, and when I preview or publish it, the background stays the same although I can see that within your set up it appears much lighter. You shared that it's happening on a few different computers - is that only when viewing the published version or the preview as well? First I'd check that you have your DPI setting set to 96 DPI.

Next, is this background change happening in all your files, or just this one? If it's one file, I'd start by importing it into a new Storyline project. If it's happening in all of your Storyline projects, I'd conduct a repair of Storyline.

Hi Ashley, thanks for the ideas! I went through all of your steps, and here's what I gathered:

-My DPI was already set at 96, so that wasn't affecting it.

-The change happens in any file using the "Velocity" background, but so far no other backgrounds I have used. So yes, it is affecting multiple files.

-I tried to import this particular project into a new one, and the same thing happens.

-I did a repair (reinstall) of Storyline, and the same thing happens.

To the best of my knowledge, the background was being affected by the color scheme. I switched to another scheme and was able to get the darker look I was intending, but it still lightens on preview/publish. Only now, it lightens from a completely black appearance to what I saw in my first image. In the end I got the result I wanted, but the process is frustrating - not being able to see an accurate representation while editing.

Hi Britne,

It sounds like you've got it working, but I'd still be curious to see what happened and if it's something I can replicate here. Can you share your .story file with us here so that I can see which color scheme you had used? I tried one that looked similar to yours, and didn't have any lightness in the background but I'd be happy to test yours as well.

Aw, thank you so much Bruce! I appreciate the complement!

My current story file is huge, but I dropped the first slide into a new project and set it up with the same background (Velocity) and color scheme (Apex) and I'm having the same issue in the new file. I'm attaching it so you can have a look.

Thank you so much for your help with this! While changing the color scheme worked for this project, I'm hoping I don't have a setting wrong or something else minor that might affect other projects.

Hi Britne,

Thanks for sending along the one slide, that's really helpful! I published your slide to my AO account (http://aterwilliger.articulate-online.com/9369901886) and took a screen shot of the original and the published included below. I see the text looks a bit fuzzy, which is a known issue during publish - but the backgrounds look pretty identical to me. I didn't change any of your publish settings either.
