Storyline caps progress for Essay questions

Dec 20, 2014

Hi,

This is my first time posting a question and I'm really hoping someone can help because I'm stumped and I desperately need a solution.  I've searched all the forums and tried my .story file on two different LMS' and the Scorm Cloud and I still can't get this to work.

I created a Storyline project with dozens of essay questions.  I set the progress to automatically resume on start.  Each essay question has a 5,000 character limit.  I also want users to be able to revisit each essay question in case they want to add or change a comment.  The problem is, Storyline only seems to track the progress up to a certain point.  I've done plenty of testing and it seems to cut off the progress tracking once all questions have a combined amount of characters or data.  It seems to be somewhere around 1,000 characters including spaces.

I've attached a simplified version of what I'm trying to do.  You'll see that there are 12 essay questions.  If you enter a few words in each question, everything will track properly.  However, if you enter maybe 3 or 4 lines (approx. 250 characters with spaces) in question 1, then do the same for question 2, 3, 4, etc. you'll see that at some point the progress will no longer save.  It doesn't always happen in the same place, it seems to depend on when you go over that overall character limit.

Everything works fine when I preview in Storyline.  It's only an issue once it's published and as I noted above I've published to different places.  I've tried toggling the "when running in LMS, ignore Flash cookie" option, I've tried using short answer instead of essay questions, I've tried using Scorm 1.2, 2004, AICC, Tin Can and I've tried changing the LMS reporting from Completed/Incomplete to Passed/Incomplete, etc.

I hope what I've said makes sense.  Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Adrian

There will be a data limit, scorm 2004 version 3 and above will hold more data.I expect that some LMS may truncate each question at 256 characters but you should be able to go over 5000 characters in total with Scorm 2004 v3 and above.  Scormcloud will actually go over any limit and will just give you a warning that it has happened.

Hi Phil, thanks for the quick response.

I noticed my LMS truncates each question at 256 characters and I'm ok with that, but I can't get the total characters for all questions anywhere near 5,000 characters.  I tried publishing to Scorm 2004 version 3 and 4 and the progress isn't tracked if I enter about 250 characters into about 6 of the questions.

Thanks,
Adrian

I checked the logs and it looks like data is being duplicated. I entered sample responses to 6 essay questions. I limited each question to a 50 character limit. I published to Scorm 1.2. I'm fine with the lower data limit in Scorm 1.2, but I don't seem to be close to the limit.

Here are my responses to the questions along with the # of times they appear in the log:
"Section 1 sample 50 characters limit." = appears 33 times in the log
"Section 2 sample 50 characters limit." = appears 27 times in the log
"Section 3 sample 50 characters limit." = appears 21 times in the log
"Section 4 sample 50 characters limit." = appears 15 times in the log
"Section 5 sample 50 characters limit." = appears 9 times in the log
"Section 6 sample 50 characters limit." = appears 3 times in the log

Maybe I'm reading the log incorrectly.

Thanks,
Adrian
