Storyline freezes with CefSharp.BrowswerSubprocess error

May 23, 2021

I was wondering if anyone else is having an issue with Storyline freezing on a regular basis? I have been having this issue for the last month or so and as I dug in a little deeper, I noticed two things:

  1. Why is Storyline still only 32 bit software?
  2. Opening Task Manager after the freeze, I find the same CefSharp.BrowserSubprocess listed within the Articulate Storyline process.

Some basic web search reveals that this is an application used my many other applications but it is one that cannot be uninstalled or updated by the end user.

I have already uninstalled and reinstalled Storyline but that did not help. It is getting really frustrating because I cannot get any real work done with these freezes. Forcing Storyline to quit and losing work is not good.

Any thoughts?

Hi William!

I appreciate you bringing this to our attention! I see similar cases that relate to CefSharp.BrowserSubprocess. I'd like to have our Support Engineers step in to determine what is getting in the way. You should've received an email confirming that I've started a case on your behalf. You'll hear from our Support Engineers shortly!

Hello Luciana,

We did not receive a reply from William to confirm, but I'd be happy to start the conversation here.

Do you have any anti-virus or firewall software running on your device? We have previously seen where the user's anti-virus prevented the communication through the server resulting in the app crashing.

If you need instructions for enabling a process, please contact our support engineers directly here.

Actually, I did reply but the solutions offered did not resolve my situation so I set it aside. I still do not know what was causing the issue. After shutting down my computer and returning after the weekend, the problem seemed to be less frequent. Now, several weeks later, the problem has not returned.

Not the answer anyone was looking for. I wasn't using any additional virus protection software and I had temporarily disabled the Windows virus protection. Did not resolve the issue. The only thing I could think of as a possible cause would be that Windows was updating something in the background that I was not aware of.

Luciana, the only advice I can offer is to make sure that your computer is not updating or running any tasks in the background that could be interfering with Storyline. Actually, I wonder if booting Windows in Safe Mode would help? That should stop any extraneous background processes. Leslie, what do you think?

I wish I had a better answer for everyone involved and I wish you luck in chasing down this issue.

Hi Leslie and William!

Thank you for your suggestions.

I only have Windows security running, but I do know if that could be the reason... Storyline performance changes everyday, sometimes it doesn't freeze at all (last week), and sometimes it does continuously.

I will try running Windows in a safe mode next time this happens.

Regards,

Luciana
