How do I add custom branching to 'Next' Button in Storyline Question Slides where Next is unchecked (only shows up when you revisit the slide)?

Aug 05, 2020

Hi all,

I am currently working on a project where I have a number of survey questions and branches based on responses. I have added 'Previous' button to all these slides because I want learners to be able to revisit previous screens if need be.

Now, one of my survey slides is branching to two different slides, based on the value of a variable. When I initially visit the slide, I see the 'Submit' and 'Previous' buttons at the bottom, and the branching works as intended.

When I go back to this slide later, it shows the 'Previous' and 'Next' buttons at the bottom by default. When I press this 'Next' button, the slide now jumps to the next slide in line (understandable).

But here is the thing... Though I can modify the existing trigger for the 'next' button in the slide to add a condition, I am unable to add a new trigger to this 'next' button because it is unchecked in the slide properties. Is there a way to do this??

Any response will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Anuradha

Try this:

  • Create a T/F variable to track whether the question was answered. Set its initial value to False.
  • Check the box that puts the Next button on the slide.
  • Add a trigger to hide the Next button when the variable is False (i.e., when person goes to the slide but hasn't answered the question).
  • Add a trigger to the Submit button to change the variable to True.

See an example in the attached file.
