Not sure what you were trying to accomplish, but I was able to do an overlay of a circle on top of the marker to be able to add a letter to the shape. By making it slightly smaller than the marker icon, it still allowed the swirl or pulse of the button to come through behind it.
Robert, this sent me in the right direction. I tried the overlay, but the font would disappear anytime I hovered or clicked down. So, I figured out that I need to add the font to each state. Thanks for sending me down the right path.

You cannot add text to the marker shape itself.
