Tabbing does not work in Preview mode

Aug 11, 2020

I am currently working on a course in Storyline 3 (v3.10.22406.0, which I believe is the latest version) and when I preview the slide, I am unable to tab through any of the actual slide elements beyond the previous and next buttons and skip navigation. Possibly also the audio button. I have set the tab order for these slides, but cannot seem to access any of the text or other content using only the keyboard when in Preview mode. I would rather not have to publish multiple versions just to check whether the tab order for each slide is working as it should. Is there a setting I need to toggle? Is this a known issue? Thanks!

Hi Emily, text is no longer accessed using the tab keys. There were significant accessibility updates earlier this year to improve how text is accessed via screen readers. As a result of these updates, the tab keys will now only move to interactive elements on the slide. This is expected behaviour.

It is still important to organise the tab order, as this determines the order in which a) Interactive elements are accessed using the tab key and b) the order in which text content is read by screen readers.

If you use a screen reader to test your content, you will have to get familiar with using the cursor keys as well as tab. It's worth getting a document containing the shortcut keys for the screen readers you test with.

Hi Emily!

I'm happy to step in! When previewing a course, you'll want to tab to the slide first and then use the arrow keys to move through the content.

For example, if I was to move through this slide below in Preview mode, here are the keyboard shortcuts I'd use:

  1. Tab to the slide, which will highlight the border of the slide.
  2. Use the down arrow to hear, "Let's take a quiz about Math!"
  3. Tab to the Next navigation button to move to the next slide.

I recommend testing a screen reader in the published output so you can see exactly what your users will experience. Let me know if you have additional questions!
