Is there an easy way for a text data entry box to be set so a student can just start typing rather than having to click with the mouse in the box first?
Try placing your data entry box at the bottom of the slide's timeline (Send to Back). This shoud give focus to the data entry box without having to click into it first.
The only ways to force focus in the text entry would be the option shared above by Michael or it would occur once the user clicked in the text entry box.
Thanks John - this thread is a bit older, so I'm not sure if Allen or others are still subscribed or in need of assistance here, but thanks for sharing some additional information.
I'm trying to do the same thing, enable the user to start typing without having to click the text entry box first. I have sent the box to the background, as suggested, but this is not working.
I am using a free form text entry question, done in 360, does this require a different process?
Are you viewing the HTML5 output? That sounds similar to an issue reported to our team, where the Text Entry doesn't have the focus on the slide in the HTML5 output - but it does in Flash. If you look at the URL/web link to your course, an HTML5 version would end in "...story_html5.html"
This discussion is flagged for an update once we have more information on that. So you're in the right place to be updated on any progress. Thanks for reaching out, and I'm sorry it's causing you some issues.
I struggle with this in the current version of Storyline 360 3.11.14249
I used the screen recording to capture some simulation steps, and in those with data entry the capturing does not work well, the text fields are not on-screen after recording, so I delete them and put a new TextEntry, making sure to put the textentry lowest on the time line.
Yet the slide begins with text box out of focus and I have to click, which is unlike the real world web page I capture the simulation for.
What could I do to make it work? I submitted ticket 01233471 as well.

That does the trick, Michael. Thanks so much!
Dorothy
Unfortunately, this doesn't work if your entry field must sit atop a graphic. It hides the entry field, so no entry is possible.
Is there any other way to establish focus in an entry field? Esp. important when you have more than one.
Allen

Hey folks! I'm happy to let you know that we just released Update 12 for Storyline 360, and you can check out the new features and fixes here!
Specifically included in this version is a fix to address some issues with data entry fields:
Simply update Storyline to the latest version and republish your project to see the fix. Here's how updating Storyline 360 works.
I'm happy to hear how you make out!
It seemed to work on my projects, Crystal.
