Timeline item names do not carry over from layout master to new slide

Dec 12, 2014

So I was making some master slides that are meant to be used by others to create more specific slides. In order to make things a lot more organized for those others, I decided to arrange and rename all the items in the timeline in such a way that their function would be instantly clear. However, when testing this out, I found that the item names in the timeline do not carry over from the master to a new slide. This seems inconsistent with the idea of the timeline being there to make things more organized and grant a clear overview, at least in more than just numerical order. If this can be confirmed, I would like to propose that this be a matter to be addressed in a future update.

Hello Jordi!

When you create a Slide master, the items on its timeline will only be available to see and edit from the slide master view. These items will not appear in a new slide where you apply a master layout.

If you wanted to make something that can be shared and when they can see the items on a timeline, you may want to save the file as a template.

Thank you, Emily, for replying. I had considered the possibility of being wrong about this and I think now that I was. However, another mistake I made is that I wasn't talking about slide masters but about layouts. Forgive my clumsiness. These layouts do carry their timeline items over to slides, although not all of them (also including triggers, which kind of makes sense). This then was the cause of my concern, because the items it did carry over, were renamed in the timeline, which still seems slightly odd. Because why would it?

This being said, I understand now that there is a significant difference between slide masters and layouts and a template, something I was not aware of before now (not entirely my own fault, I should add). I'm hoping that this difference will mean a solution to the (general) carry-over problem. However, the page explaining templates does not go into this, so I will look into it myself and experiment. Though, if you would be able to contribute to my understanding of the subject without going to too much trouble, I would be very grateful.

Hello Jordi!

Slide master are where you can set up a layout that you can use on any slide in the course. The items on this timeline will not carry over into new slides, as they are designed to only be modified within the Master view. you can select which slide master you want to use when you insert a slide, or by using the Layout drop down.

Templates are used as a base to get a new file started. These can consist of regular slides, and also a master slide set up. The regular slides should import with all of the items on the timeline, and will be editable within the slide timeline.

Do you have a file we could look at?
