Triggers on Original Slide

I have a built an interaction scenario where the user has a list of topics to visit by clicking on eight separate buttons. When the click on a button it takes them to a layer which once completed takes them back to the original slide.

The problem that I am having is that when they return to the original slide the trigger I have set up to show their completion on the button is not working. I've used similar scenarios before and it has worked fine, but for some reason this one is not. I have tried the settings for the slide between the "resume saved state" or "automatically decide" and that doesn't change anything. I have also tried reconfiguring my triggers to no avail. Any suggestions or ideas?
