I am developing a course in Storyline 2. People with IE 11 are able to open up the Word docs fine but users with IE 8 (yes, I'm afraid some still have it) are unable to.
That thread is a bit older and specific to Presenter - although the steps look general enough to Windows. Can you try instead to link to PDF copies of those Word files vs. the Word files themselves? Maybe that would play better with IE8?
