Variables and Triggers

Aug 25, 2014

I saw an article before but I can't find it It is the article that shows me how to add variables and triggers referring to having someone complete the quiz questions before moving forward.

Basically I want the person to submit the answer but if they get it wrong they have to retake until they are allowed to move forward. Can someone help me with this?

I also do not know the triggers to ensure the users cannot move forward until the timeline has finished but but keep it at a set state when they go back to the slide.

Thank you.

Hi Britannia,

I'm not sure I'm following what you're trying to set up -

If you're using the built in quiz questions, you can include a try again layer by enabling the attempts to more than 1:

If you allow multiple tries, Storyline adds a "Try Again" section to the Feedback area on the question editor. This is the feedback that’ll appear if a learner answers incorrectly. You can make changes to the feedback here on the question editor. Or, when you return to the Normal View of your slide, you can make the changes to the to the “Try Again” slide layer that Storyline creates for you. (Learn more about slide layers.)

You also mentioned you wanted the slide to finish the timeline - meaning, do you not want the user to be able to click on any elements until they've been on the slide for a set period of time? What about adding a transparent shape over the top of the buttons for your quiz, and set the timeline on that object to end at a certain point? If the user tries to click on a button they won't be able to as the shape will be in the way - so you'll want to include some type of messaging to let them know that the buttons will be active after X seconds or such.

If we're misunderstanding, could you share a bit more specifics about what you'd like to do?

So I will explain a little more. I apologize. I thought I fixed this on my story project but it is still not working correctly.

If I have a slide with a timeline that I do not want the user to click ahead until it is finished nor do I want the slide to skip to the next slide unless the user pushes the next button. I feel there are two triggers here. One - so the user does not skip ahead to the next slide and two - the user has to push the next button to get to that slide when the timeline is finished.

I tried using variables and thought it worked but when I got to the slide, it wouldn't let me transition to the next slide when I hit the next button.

I have slides set as this: Slide Trigger: Jump to next slide when timeline ends on the condition that slide...equal to true (variable is true. With the Player trigger stating the same but Jump to next slide when user clicks next button.

I am not sure what i am doing wrong here. Is there a step by step article I can follow?

I fixed the quiz so I am okay on that.

Thanks

Hi Britannia,

Ok, so for the next slide trigger - it sounds like a few things are happening.

First, you mentioned setting the trigger to jump to slide when the timeline ends, but if you want the user to click on the next button - that will need to be the "when" part of the trigger. You can still add the conditions based on that the variable is still true so ensure the user stays on the slide to the very end.

Next, no need to have the slide and the player trigger - especially in this scenario it sounds like one is blocking the other.

To help get you started with triggers, I'd start with this tutorial on slide triggers. You'll also want to check into the slide's properties and ensure it's set to advance by user, instead of automatically.

Since you're using the variable conditions on your next trigger, I also wanted to point you to this article on step by step directions on how to set it up.

Hope that helps, and feel free to let us know if you have other questions!
