Video gets resized with Safari on iPad

Nov 17, 2023

We created a quick introductive video for our modules. We never had problems with that when testing it on multiple devices: plays just fine with no compatibility or size problems at all.

This is how it looks on all our projects so far:

I am currently working on a new project containing the same video. For an unknown reason, when testing our module with Safari on iPad (more specifically, iPad Gen8 with iOS 17.1.1), the same video looks scaled like this:

We never had problems with this video before, and the problem only happens on this project and specifically with Safari on iPad.

Any ideas of why this happens? Did anyone ever experienced anything similar?

I'm currently working on Storyline 360 v3.75.30269.0

Thank you all in advance!

Hi Daniele!

It sounds like you hit a snag with videos from your Storyline course being resized when viewing the content on an iOS device. I'd be happy to help with that!

Testing the behavior on my end (via Storyline 360 version 3.81.31200.0) I built a sample file with video, published it to Web/HTML, and accessed the course via Safari on my iPhone.

vertical_test

Whether I viewed the course in vertical, or landscape mode, the video size adapted to the screen size of my device successfully. Everything was working as expected!

  • Can you please clarify if you were testing the course in an LMS environment or web server?

Also, it would be helpful to take a closer look at the file that's giving you trouble. Would you mind sharing a copy here in the discussion or privately with our support engineers?

In the meantime, I would suggest upgrading your Storyline 360 application to our current version and republishing to see if that improves the issue!

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi Steven,

Thank you so much for your support on this, and sorry for the late reply.

Due to internal restrictions on software updates, I'm still waiting for a newer version to get provided. In the meanwhile, we tested the module on multiple iPads and this is what we found out:

  • We tested the module on the LMS (SuccessFactors)
  • The problem only happens with Safari on iPad
  • Content works on iOS16, problem occurs since iOS17.1
  • The problem does not happen when a user starts the training holding the iPad horizontally
  • When a user starts the training holding the iPad vertically, then rotates horizontally, the problem occurs
  • If a user starts the training horizontally and then rotates, there is no problem

Hope this can help while we wait for our software to be updated. I have also attached the slide in question here.

Thank you so much again!

Hello Daniele,

Happy to help!

I tested your project file by uploading it in SCORM Cloud and accessing it using an iPad running iPadOS 17.1.2 and I can confirm that after initially viewing the course vertically and then switching to horizontal view, the video gets resized properly.

As a troubleshooting step, try accessing this link using your iPad to test if the behavior you're encountering is specific to SuccessFactors LMS. If the issue is specific to your LMS, please reach out to their support team to have them correct the behavior.
