Video on Layer will not play

Feb 04, 2018

I have created an SL2 project, one slide, where several layers open successively*, each having a video on them. There are four MP4s and one quick time. They are set to start automatically. The whole project previews in SL perfectly.

When published, checking the html5 version, in Safari all the MP4s show just as still pics rather than videos, but quick time works. In Chrome, two of the MP4s play OK, two show only as still pictures, the quick time works.

In the Flash version, the videos/pics don't even appear on screen

I get the same problems when opening the local published files, or opening them from an internet web server.

I created something simpler to check this further (attached). One layer opens at 6 secs, a second at about 19sec. Both layers have videos on them, set to start auto. Even less successful than the above project, on publishing, neither of these videos will play in a browser!

Am I doing something that's not supposed to be done in SL? I would appreciate any help!

n.b. *I'm doing this rather than setting up several slides, to get a single piece of music across the whole project. I have tried putting the code for the MP3 into the html of story.html, but it's just not possible to get the timing perfect.

Hi John,

I added a trigger to each layer to start the video when the timeline on the layer starts, as sometimes the auto-start doesn't work as it should.

I took the liberty of uploading to my site, for testing, and it seems to be working ok.

I'll attach the amended SL file as well.

Hi Veronica,

thanks very much for looking at this for me!

I did think about, and try to add a start (play media) trigger on the layers. But when I started to build the trigger, the dialog box did not display any media to select as the target, despite it being there. I found out just now that I have to partially complete  the trigger and save it without any media target being selected. The edit it, and then the trigger dialog finds the video.

Ho hum.

Thanks again

Hi Ashley,

I am using SL2 11:1609.3020 at the moment.

I have checked out this problem a bit more, it's quite fickle. Just now I replicated the problem - see attached screen shot. You can see the dialog box doesn't contain any Video media to select. The video is placed on the layer and can be seen behind the box.

However, I just noted that this happens if the video on the layer is selected (so it appears as the Object in the dialog rather than the layer being targeted). If the video is there but not selected, it appears in the dialog 'Media:' (as it is supposed to)

Hi John,

If the video is on the layer, you'd need to be on that layer to include it as the top part of that trigger. If you're using the base slide layer to control it, could you look at also including the video on the base slide?

Also, I just wanted to let you know that Storyline 2 is now on Update 12. It wouldn't impact this issue, but it's always a good idea to be on the latest updates! You can see the version history and steps to update here.

Hi,

I am having exactly similar issues on the latest version of storyline 360 (3.12.14647.0).

I have 8 videos on the layers (all MP4 ). They all run fine when run locally or in the slide preview which means there is nothing wrong with the video itself.

When I run them in the on an Ipad some of the videos work correctly but some of them just display a white screen. This is quite annoying as I have client complaining that the videos do not work on their ipads

iPad (Chrome, Safari) - Some videos don't work, Displays white screen

Local browser (IE, Chrome ) - All videos works fine

Hosted on a website (IE, Chrome) - All videos works fine

Articulate review (IE, Chrome) - All videos works fine

Please can you have a look into this issue on the ipad

Thanks

Ganesh

Hey everybody. I'm excited to let you know that we just released update 17 for Storyline 360! It includes new features and fixes - check them all out here.

One of the fixes addresses an issue where videos were hanging on iOS devices after viewing a certain number of videos already.

Here’s how you can update Storyline 360 to take advantage of everything the latest release has to offer. Let me know how you make out!

Hi Crystal,

Thanks for the update. I was really excited to know the news.

I have tested this new fix fully and I have some good news,  bad news... Sorry.. and goof=d news again

Good news

The video fix seems to have worked as I have tested the version, which had issue before. So all those videos which wasn't working in the prev version are now working. Next, prev come back and the videos still work.

The videos now play and you don't get the white screen as long as you are on the same page and

However... what I have observed is

The bad news

If you open a new tab or move to a new tab which is already open and then come back and continue and then click on the same videos. I get white blank page again

The good news again

Simply refresh the browser (you might loose the completion states(if any) as its playing the page as if it was the first go

For me, its still much better than the prev version and most users don't even know this bug unless they move to a new tab.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

Hi Ashley,

I think I may have found the cause. I will summarise the testing today.

I explained the video issue to our team and some wider team member did the testing and some of them did on had any issues. On further investigation, I found that they were on the lower ios version than the people were having issues.

I try to replicate the same issue using browserstack and found that the video work fine on ipad on ios version 10.3.2 .

However, if I use the ipads on higher version i.e. 11+ then I was able to replicate the issue.

Hope this helps everyone.

Thanks

Hi Ganesh,

Hm, it looks like our team was also testing on a lot of ios 11+ devices and didn't have an issue with the videos. Could you share a copy of your course where this was tripping you up?

Let me know, if you can link to it here I can test or if you need to share it privately our team is always around here.

Has there been any resolution or solution to this issue?

I am working with Storyline 3 - the latest update. I have videos on several slides - all work perfectly.

Then, on the slide with several (6) layers (each with a standalone video), none of them work. The user clicks on a button to show the layer with the appropriate video, the layer opens, the video does not play. I have added triggers to play the video; this does not work. Placing the videos on individual slides (base slides/layers) works; only when placed on layers do they not work.

What is the issue, when will there be an update/fix?

Teammate Learning and Development

Fantastic! I know that the recent update addressed the automatic playing of audio/video in Chrome, so I'm looking forward to this update as well.

As FYI...no, I haven't tried it on any iOS as most of the eLearning I create is delivered in-house via desktop/laptop. The issue is still there - videos on layers being triggered by buttons or other links - will not play when shown. However, placing the videos on their own slides does work.

Thanks again,

James

Avise Learning

Hi there.  Was there any resolution to this?  I'm having the same issue as James.  I need to be able to mute my slide narration if someone plays the embedded youtube video.  The only way I could come up with to do this was to put the video on its own layer.  This way, I have an image with a play button on the base layer that, when clicked, mutes the slide narration and then also shows the Video layer which plays the video automatically (in theory).  Unfortunately the video isn't playing.   Thanks! (ps. I'm using storyline 360)

Katie Riggio

Hi, Mathew. So sorry you're running into some playback issues. Happy to help!

This truly sounds like the perfect opportunity to do some digging into your setup. Are you able to share your .story file here or privately through this link? I'll give it a test and let you know what I find!

Additionally, what version of Storyline 360 are you using? To find out, click on the Help tab > About Storyline.

Katie Riggio

Good morning to the folks who are curious about the outcome from the conversation above!

Circling back to share that Mathew had a slide with a recorded narration and an embedded YouTube video. The goal was to have the narration pause when learners click on the YouTube video, so there is no audio overlap.

With this in mind, we put the video as a Web Object on a separate layer > enabled the special autoplay parameter listed here > On the same layer, checked the Pause timeline of base layer property > Added an image of the video as a placeholder on the base layer. That way, when learners click on the image, the video layer will automatically play and the narration will be paused.

Hope that helps, and thanks for following along!
