Video playback issues in Storyline 3 with IE 11
Aug 10, 2018
We have published a SCORM 2004 course built using Storyline 3 to our SumTotal LMS. When we try to run the course in IE 11, the videos are not displayed. We can see that they are running from the seek bar. However, the video screen just shows up as black. In addition, there is no sound.
I have tested the course successfully in SCORM Cloud. It also works fine in Chrome. Interestingly, the course works fine if I check the box for compatibility view. In the other posts for IE 11 video issues, it looks like the opposite generally holds true. The company wide setting for us is that the box is unchecked, so we're hoping to find a workaround that lets us keep it that way.

Hi there, Brian. We are looking into a similar issue. HD videos won't play when viewing content on Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 7 PC given the following scenario:
Does this match your setup?
Hi Crystal,
Sorry for the delay in replying. The only attributes below that matched our course were having videos bigger than 998 pixels wide and publishing in HTML5. We did republish after shrinking the video size to 640 pixels wide, but it had no effect. They still show a black box during playback without audio. I hope this helps.

Really appreciate the extra detail, Brian!
For next steps, could you see if your course works as expected in SCORM Cloud? This will tell us if the video playback issue in IE11 is mostly related to Storyline or SumTotal's output.
If you're able to share the unpublished project file with us, we'll also give it a test on our end and let you know what we find!
Hi Katie,
We have tested the course in SCORM Cloud. The videos play correctly and the course completes as expected. Thanks for checking in.

How should I send the file to you? It is about 40 MB.
Thanks for giving the course a test there, Brian!
Here's where you can share your project file with us. We're standing by, and will take a close look to see what could be causing this problem.
Was there a resolution to this issue? We are experiencing something very similar to Brian's now.
Hi Erika!
It looks like Brian was working with one of our Support Engineers in a case. They found the issue to be network settings prohibiting videos from playing in IE 11. If you're experiencing something similar, I'd recommend submitting a case so that we can offer personalized help. Please use this link to submit a case.
