What is the effect of updating a course in an LMS with a change in the total slide number

Oct 21, 2015

I have a course in my client's LMS that needs to  be updated (adding 10 new slides.) I want to know what effect uploading the new version wold have on users who are "in progress" (have started the course but have yet to complete it.) I am assuming the suspend data from a previous version may cause errors in the updated version (bookmarking, etc.) Completion status is set to track if all the slides were visited so I can see how that is also in danger of being compromised. Does anyone have insights on how best to resolve the issue? I suggested that the client clear out any "in progress" users data to avoid the issue but I am not sure they will approve of that idea. They do not want to have 2 versions of this course residing in the LMS either.

Hi Randall,

When you update (overwrite) existing course files in your LMS or web server, learners who previously started the course won't be able to resume where they left off. They'll start over at the first slide in the updated course. Take this into consideration when updating courses that have already been delivered to learners. So you'll want to look at if you need to capture their data and completion amount now - and/or instruct them to finish before updating or else they'll need to restart.

Hope that helps!

Hi Randall,

It's not Storyline knowing the difference in the courses - but your LMS. It's based on time stamps of when you've uploaded them, other elements or changes in the file, etc. So it'll treat it as a new version and overwrite the existing when you add it and it has the same file name. If you changed the file name your LMS should treat it as a brand new course.
