Why is textbox resizing acting this way?

I have a textbox with several variables in it. I want the textbox to resize itself when the variables change, staying at the current font size. These are the settings i have for the textbox.
It is set to resize the shape to fit the text. This is what it looks like with when i publish it with empty variables:
But when a user adds their notes, especially when the notes start getting long, it shrinks the text still!
What am I doing wrong? I want the shape to expand indefinitely in the scrolling panel, but no matter how I set the properties it keeps shrinking the text to fit the shapes current size! Is there a solution to this?
Thanks!

Here is an example .story file for anyone interested
Hi Jackson,
Textboxes won't update dynamically to accommodate variable text - so you'll want to set it for as long as you may need. Even though it's in a scrolling panel it'll only scroll for as large as you made the box.
I have the same problem when populating a text box with variable content in that the text always shrunk instead of the textbox increasing in size. I worked around the issue by placing the variable in a shape instead of a textbox.
