Issues with Layers on a Video slide.

Hello, I need help with an issue that I am having with layers on a video slide.  The slide is set up to play a video, and then pause at certain intervals to pop open a layer.  Everything works great unless the end user drags the seekbar back to an interval that is before a cue point for a layer.  At that point, the last layer pops open no matter where I am on the seekbar.

Is there a way around this?  I would like the layers to appear only if the user is playing the video normally, not searching for a specific place in the video.

  • Click the player properties button and then on the left side panel in Player Controls set the Seekbar to read-only.

    Thanks James.

That solution will not work for me because I want the user to be able to go back and review parts of the video.  I just want to limit the layer from appearing after the first time.

I have tried using Lightboxes to get around this, and I am having the same issue.

      Hello Terry,

      Happy to chime in!

The behavior that you're seeing where layers appear after clicking through the timeline is by design. As a workaround, one way to control the layers so that they only appear once is to make use of variables to limit their appearance.

With this configuration, you can add a trigger in the layers to adjust the values of the variable to True, which would prevent the layers from displaying on revisit.

Note that if you'd like your learners to not see the layers when using the seek bar to view earlier parts of the video, they'll first need to click on the replay button in the Player.

I've attached a sample project file so you can see how this workaround works. Let me know if you have any questions!

        Thanks Jose!

This was very helpful.  I took your advice on variables and applied them to Lightboxes connected to a quiz slide.

If the user watches the video past the cue point and then clicks to a time on the seekbar before the cue point, then the video behaves perfectly.  (The lightbox does not appear and the video does not pause.)

However, there is still some strange behavior if the user skips forward to a time after a cue point.  The closest lightbox opens, but the video does not pause.  The end user can just answer the question at this point and continue, but this is slightly awkward with video and audio playing in the background.

I am trying to find a way to either make the lightbox not trigger at all, or at least pause the video if the the user skips forward.

        Any thoughts?

I am also curious if there is any plan from Articulate to add native Video Quiz functionality to Storyline at any point.
