Resetting to Initial State Doesn't Work...

Can someone tell me why Articulate Storyline still has options in a knowledge check selected after a "try again" even though I clearly specified in the settings that I want it "reset to the initial state?"

I know that there's a lot of counter-intuitive components to Storyline, but I'm hoping I don't get a convoluted explanation/guide of what needs to be done to circumnavigate an option that should be decided based on the simple setting to reset to initial state...

  • Hi Edward,

Slide elements return to their default positions when you have the revisit behavior set to "reset to the initial state". Note that this behavior applies to learners navigating away from the slide and returning back.

The 'Try Again' layer on the other hand simply hides the feedback layer so your learners can have another attempt at answering the question. When the 'Try Again' layer is closed or hidden, the learner is never navigated to another slide, which means the slide does not get the chance to reset.

One alternative that you can do is to use a 'Jump to slide' trigger instead of the default 'Hide layer' trigger in your 'Try Again' layer and jump the learner to the slide that they are on to trigger the reset. I've attached a demo file so you can see how this configuration will reset the slide elements to their default positions.

Let me know if you have any questions!

  • When I jump to the slide it resets my number of tries which leaves the learner able to get it wrong indefinitely.

      Hi Kristin,

I'm sorry to hear you've hit this snag! A misplaced trigger may be resetting the number of tries variable in your Storyline course. If you're comfortable sharing your file with us, we'd be happy to look at how the triggers are set up and suggest a fix. You can upload it here or privately in a support case. We'll delete it when we're done.

  • It only occurs on the Knowledge checks on slide 1.6 and 1.11;  I have messed with it so much I don't know what features have been checked.  I have tried making new slides to see if it was something that I accidentally clicked.  It just won't return to the original state.  I tried having it jump to the slide again which will reset it but then won't count against their 2 chances.  It will stall them out on that slide until they have it correct rather than give them a set number of chances.

    Thanks, Kristin

  • Hi Kristin,

Thanks for sharing additional details and the Storyline project file! I tested it and slides 1.6 and 1.11 work as expected. They are both set for two tries and to reset when revisiting. I showed my results in detail in this 4-minute Peek 360 recording. I also attached the revised file with the test navigation buttons for your reference.

If you see a different result and are working on your local drive, try running these steps to fix possible installation issues. Please feel free to share a screen recording of what you see if I did not get the correct reproduction steps. I'm more than happy to assist further!

      Hi Kristin,

Thanks for sharing the video. The behavior you described is the normal behavior when you click on the 'Try Again' button for drag-and-drop interactions. One workaround that you can use to reset the positions of the items is to jump the learner back to the same slide after they click on the 'Try Again' button. One drawback of jumping the learner to the same slide is that the number of attempts is reset, but you can always use variables to track the attempts as an alternative.

I've attached an edited version of Slide 1.6 so you can see this workaround in action.

Let me know if you have any questions!

    Bonjour,

I have a similar problem: even if my slide is set to "Reset initial state" and the Retry layer trigger is set to "Go to this slide", the slide doesn't return to its initial state - it remains in the same state. How can I fix this?

    I've attached an example slide.

    Merci,
    Alain

It seems like the issue might stem from using the default 'Try Again' button, which solely hides the Try Again layer without resetting the interaction (please check the master feedback layer).

To address this, you could utilize a custom 'Continue' button that jumps to this slide and resets the interaction, or add an additional trigger to the 'Try Again' feedback layer that jumps to this slide. However, be mindful that jumping to this slide might reset the number of attempts to zero if the initial setting allows more than one attempt. Consequently, the 'Try Again' layer may consistently appear. In this scenario, you'd need to employ an additional custom variable to manage and monitor the number of attempts accurately.

Another option would be to watch the tutorial by David Anderson, available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ink_sd06g6M. It demonstrates how to reset drag items back to their original positions after clicking the "Try Again" button without affecting the number of attempts.
