Quiz settings: continue after 2 retries

Hi all,

When I insert a quiz in my course, I want the learner to be able to continue after a certain amount of retries - let's say: 2 - regardless if they passed the score or not. I don't want the learner to be stuck in my course.

To achieve that, I go to quiz settings and choose "2" in the drop down menu behind "Quiz Retries". But choosing the amount of retries doesn't seem to have any influence on whether I can continue a course or not. The setting "require passing score to continue" does have influence. If I switch this one "on", it doesn't matter how many times I got it wrong, I still have to pass the score. If I switch it "off", I can continue after 1 try, even if I set "quiz retries" to "2". But neither one of the two is what I would like to happen.

So, in short, is it possible to let a learner try a quiz 3 times max and then continue regardless the score?

Hi Renzo,

There's not currently a way to both limit the number of attempts and require learners to reattempt the quiz a certain number of times before moving on, even if they never get a passing score.

However, our team has a feature request logged for this capability and I will make sure your voice gets added to the discussion.

Hi Allison,

Thnx.

Just to be sure: what I mean is that learners get for example 3 chances max to pass the score. Then they can move on, regardless the score. The score is shown at the end of the quiz, so if you didn't pass the score it's just valuable feedback for the learner (I didn't pass so I have to study more on this subject!).

But, if this is not possible right now, what does the setting "quiz retries" do? If you have to pass the score, the amount of retries doesn't matter. And if you don't, you can move on anyway. So when/how do you use "Quiz retries"?

Hi Renzo,

That's correct, that's not currently possible. The quiz retries setting is meant to be used independently of the require passing score feature, not together. If you choose require passing score, learners will have to keep retaking the quiz until they receive a passing score, regardless of the number of quiz attempts you've selected.

I hope that makes sense!

Hi Renzo,

I just wanted to follow up here because I spoke to our developers and it looks like I made a mistake when I responded to you, so I wanted to apologize for that and to explain to you how this is set up to work.

If you choose 2 retries and require a passing score, the learners will actually get 3 tries total (including the first one) and afterwards they won't be able to move on.

However, there's still no way to do what you're trying to do, which is to force them to try a certain number of times before continuing on.

I hope that makes sense! Sorry for the confusion.

Hi there, Stephan. If someone re-takes a quiz multiple times within the same course attempt, we commit the most recent quiz score to the LMS upon exit. So, they could pass it then fail it, or fail it and then pass it, and we’d report the more recent result.

Does that answer your question?
